I think that education is the most obvious industry where having an education is not a benefit. I had a few interviews this summer, but the degree was (off the record) the primary problem.

Gee kids, work hard, get an education and you can get a job in education... as the custodian...

I have always experienced the opposite. HR and my administrators prefer those with advanced degrees. They like to tout that "x % of teachers have advanced degrees". If you don't have one they want to know when you are going to get it.

Friend of someone in district, advance degree is a plus or doesn't matter.

Average Jane, who has a BA/BS and an MA/MS, FORGET IT where I live. You flat out cost too much.

My DD elementary school always seen to hire straight out of college, not even with sub experience.

I know a bunch of people with a MAT, working at Target or Starbucks plus trying to sub.

We need so many teachers that they will hire either so that they have somebody but I still think they prefer the MA/MS.

There are so many teaching schools around here and universities with teaching programs that they can hire really cheap first timers they prefer not to spend money on a master's degree

Honestly, in my district your education doesn't matter. What matters is who you know. You can't get a job unless you know someone.

I think it depends on where you live. Some states/districts require it. When I was in Maryland they wanted me to have a plan for getting it. They reimbursed for classes too. I already had an equilvalency of one from another state and got hired on the spot. Some even advertise they prefer it.
But I have ran into the opposite too. I was told after an interview (in the hallway) that they wa ted to hire me but I would cost them too much. I said I was willing to be flexible on that and was hired. Some districts will get around the cost by offering you less years than your total experience on the salary table. Tell them you're willing to negotiate may help you if you want the job and can work for less.
