Globe

I used to do this with my 6th graders when I had access to water:

We made our own globes. I purchased the cheapest round kickball-sized balls I could at the dime store. We put 3-4 layers of papier mache on them. I used bent paper clips and hot glue to form a hanger so they dried on rope strung across my room. Once the papier mache layers were done, I popped the kickball inside as differences in temperature would tend to crack the papier mache. Then we spray painted them (outside) blue for water.

The students hot-glued colored string to represent the equator and Prime Meridian. These lines were the most important frames of reference. I had found continent shapes that were proportioned well to the "globes." The students cut them out, labeled and colored - very time consuming but worthwhile. I had the students start by gluing Africa, for that is the only continent in all 4 hemispheres and a good starting point. They used silver Sharpies for labeling the oceans.

The project works best in pairs, but triads can be used. Believe me, by the end they really knew everything they needed to about globes. The dialogue was encouraging, they used relative location to provide descriptions to their partners. The benefits definitely outweighed the 2 weeks it took to pull it off.

I still have past students coming up to me and letting me know they either remember doing it or still have their globe.

Sing to the tune of Frere Jacquez. Really helps to memorize especially for those who have strong musical intelligence.

How many continents?
How many continents?
On our earth?
On our earth?

There are seven.
There are seven.
Name them now.
Name them now.

Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia
North America
South America
Antarctica makes seven.
Antartica makes seven.

Those are their names.
Those are their names.
