How is your year going so far? Do you have your classroom ready? Are you bored to tears in PD or is it worthwhile and inspiring? Have you met your students? What do you think?

Please share how back to school is going for you.

Not good. I started in my room late because of construction, I wasted an extra 3 hours in meetings and an all district "kick off" (outside in the heat that took an extra hour to get there and back), my hard drive on my computer at school crashed, and I only had 7 families show up to meet the teacher last night. And I had one parent convince her kid he was going to hate 3rd grade.

Good news is the rest of my parents and kids were AMAZING, I have a great team and Mason has decided maybe he loves me again. (He wasn't speaking to me because I was gone so much.)

I'm kind of a hot mess.

I am sorry you had so few show up for the meet and greet. Maybe they are all having fabulous last minute vacations! Then they will have so many exciting adventures to share in writing when the work begins. Right?

I only have 11 students (private school) and they are the best behaved class ever! It was so quiet during our first two days that I had to turn on music to keep myself awake. lol We've arrived to lunch and specials five minutes early because they line up so quickly and quietly. It's insane! I'm not completely sure yet how they are academically, but they're such good listeners that I know I'll be able to teach them whatever they need to know.

Have a wonderful year! I would come out of retirement for a class that size and well behaved.

We have had one full week back. I was worried because of BIP's on 2 kids and 2 more that were super wired for meet the teacher. However, things are going really good. They seem to work together well, and if the behaviors I had this week are typical, I am not going to complain. I have a lot of talkers, but they are also able to have quiet times for working, so... Let's see what this next week brings!

So far it's good! I had my students in groups and they were too chatty (expected, but wanted to give it a try), so they're all facing the front now.

I really like my class. I had a ROUGH group last year, so this is a very pleasant change of pace. They're super low (0.8 reading level for one and another is PP!), but they're sweet (just chatty ).

Hoping I don't get a new student who changes the dynamics!

PD was great - short and sweet. We're going into week 3 of regular classes this week. First week of tests were good, then they got chatty last week and their tests showed their lack of attention to the lessons. Let's hope this week is better with a new seating arrangement.

But if that is your worst problem SusanTeach I know you can handle it well. Sounds like you will have a good school year as well. It is hard to believe you have been back two weeks already. Wow!

Teachers go back this Monday. The students start next Monday, August 28 (a week earlier than usual), so I'll have to let you know.

I am moving rooms. Looking at the meetings and other things scheduled for this upcoming week, I'm a little concerned that I won't have enough time to get ready for Open House on Thursday. Of course, we have all day Friday (the day after Open House) to work with nothing scheduled.

We always had the same schedule! Monday through Thursday was mostly PD with just a little time to work in our classrooms. Then by magic I room was to be a ready for a meet and greet on Thursday evening from 5 to 7. Then Friday we had time to get ready to teach the next week. The bottom line is they expect you to come in early and stay late to prepare.

True. People do that too. They opened our building to staff on Thursday of this past week and some (only some) were in the building getting their rooms ready. i stopped by on Friday with my wife who is also a teacher (I'm only 1.5 miles away from my building) to pick up my badge and keys so i don't have to deal with that Monday morning. The secretary said, "You're not staying?" and I said, "No. The contract I just signed off on said August 21 is the start date". She replied, "Good for you".

I haven't gone in early in 24 years. I'm not going to start now. I figure I can only get done what I can get done in the time they give me.

I understand. You deserve a life. Teaching often becomes too consuming. Enjoy your weekend.

On the bright side I'm only teaching one grade level this year. Last year I had two.

New school, new challenges

I changed schools this year in midsummer. So I've had to close a classroom and organize a new one, plus weeks of daylong meetings (literally) in professional development and new-staff training. I'm worn out, and the students haven't even arrived! My bigger issue is that I'm having trouble "clicking" with my new teammates. They have not been very forthcoming with info ("You'll find that out later"), and they've been insistent that I do everything exactly their way. I had a pep talk last week with the admin who hired me, and he's encouraged me to do my own thing (within reason) because they believe I bring some much-needed skills to the team. Today I feel pretty good about it--I'm gonna do what I need to do. But on Friday, I was in tears about this whole move. What the hell have I done? It's been very up-and-down emotionally.

Transitions can be difficult. I am sorry you are having doubts about changing schools. Hopefully you just need more time to adjust. You do not have to do exactly what the other teachers are doing. Close your door and teach from your heart. You even have the blessing of your administrators. Sounds like a fresh start and a good beginning to me. Get some rest so you are ready to meet all those smiling faces for the school year. I bet they make you smile too.

So, you only have two workdays before the students start? Friday and Tuesday? I'm assuming you are off on Labor Day.

But each of those days are taken up with meetings and PD for half the time, the other half we get to work in our classrooms, which is never enough time.

I wouldn't think it would be enough time. We have 5 days. Right now it looks like I should have a few hours tomorrow in my room, all day Wednesday and Friday. Tuesday and Thursday are pretty full.

I've made a promise to myself ...I will not waste time and energy thinking about uncooperative colleagues. My main focus will be on the students in my room. Being a teacher is a gift ... one that carries a tremendous responsibility. That said, if my colleagues choose to sail their ships without benefit of collaboration, it's their choice. I am experienced enough to know what my students need. Let's shut our doors and listen to our hearts and not the disturbances outside. 💜

things are going incredibly well! I seem to have a very sweet group of kiddos and very involved parents. It can be pretty hit and miss in our district. My neighbor teacher has very little parent support and involvement, so I feel thankful that I got the group of kiddos that I did. Meet and greet was last week and a HUGE success. PD was long, with a lot of tech changes this year, but I gave myself permission to simplify things. I am not spending hours and hours (and lots of money) to have the cutest class, or the best gifts, etc. If it's been working I'm not changing it...so far so good!
