Do you teach about Labor Day in social studies before or after the holiday? What do you do? Let's share ideas!

I usually read A Days Work aloud by Eve Bunting. Not very exciting. But then we can discuss what the word labor means and what the holiday means.

Only because we don't start school until after the holiday, so we usually use that as a jumping point after we talk about what students did that day.

For holidays, I usually use a passage from an online encyclopedia (not wiki) or education site. I might also have students complete a related vocabulary activity to reinforce their understanding. It's an opportunity to build knowledge of history when they discover the time, origin, and reason for a national holiday.

I love that SteelerFan! I always teach kids about holidays so they have that background knowledge. I agree and well said.
