Do you teach a social studies lesson about what Labor Day means? Let's share ideas!

I usually read A Day's Work by Eve Bunting. A read aloud is not very exciting so I am wondering what others do.

All I do is talk about it and read a quick blurb about why we have it. I figure if the kids have off school, the least I can do is explain why.

I'm curious what others do.

a work activity might be fun. Maybe the class could do something to earn a break. The break would be like a mini Labor Day. But that is as far as I've gotten.

We usually only have three days of school before Labor Day weekend. I usually just do a small reading passage about why we have it but we are still really working on routines and community building at that time.

Labor Day is a day I personally appreciate very, very much. But as a holiday, it really is lacking as a teaching point. I do nothing.

I agree. I think when Labor Day started in 1883 it was more meaningful because people worked such long hours and did not have the amount of recreation time we have today. However, I feel the history of this holiday is important to not. We need to praise people who work hard to make a living and the ones who worked hard in the past to build this country. JMO

I give a bit of background on how our country turned from mostly agricultural to industrial and what that meant for workers. I talk about the rise of unions and how that changed working conditions. Then I show this short video:

After, I have a worksheet (not specifically about Labor Day, but about jobs) that the students work on with a partner. It's pretty challenging, so I primarily think of it as more of a team building activity.

All in all, I spend about 40 minutes on Labor Day. But in the end, at least most kids have some idea of why they have Monday off.
