Clip to ScrapBook #1

Hi!

I am moving down to second grade this year and have a question:

How do you have your second graders sign out for the bathroom/nurse?

I usually did a sign out sheet with my fifth graders, but seeing as how many of the kids can't write small enough or tell the time, that won't work.

Do you provide an object for them to take with them? I think that will get germy...

Thanks!

K

I have them sign out by writing their name and have a digital clock near the sign out so they can record the time out and the time back in. They also put a pass on their desk when they leave and return it to the signout spot when they return. I have one pass for boys and one for girls.

I had a boys "pass" and a girls "pass", which they put on their desk, rather than taking with them. Besides cutting down on germs, it gave me a quick visual of who was out, especially useful when there was a fire drill.

When I taught in a place where they had to have a pass to travel in the hallway, I used clothespins that they attached to their shirt/top.

I don't know if you have desks or tables, but someone here suggested using a large rubber duck and leave it on the child's desk. Have a boy/girl (or just two ducks).

I think another had two decent size bottles of hand sanitizer, and the kids would leave those on their desk.

Both would work well if you have no one abusing the system.

I was the one that suggested rubber ducks. Once the novelty wore off, and it wore off quickly, they worked like a charm. Kids monitored each other. I chose the plastic ducks cause they were easiest to wash.

I did this once in fifth grade. It ended in a hand sanitizer fight. Needless to say that was the end of that.

A bizillon years ago when I taught 2nd grade, I had a pocket chart with each child's name on it and a bathroom pass. If a child went to the bathroom they would put the pass in their pocket and took it out when they came back. Worked like a charm.
