How do you get your kindergarten students to learn the names of other students in your class? I am looking for any ideas or activities to address this need. Thank you in advance.

We spend the first few weeks doing a lot of name activities. Part of our abc introduction is looking for each letter in everyone's name, so we look at everybody's name every day for 3 weeks. We also do a "name of the day" activity where we spell the name, find the syllables, count the letters, and then I mix them up and that student comes up and fixes it. I also greet every student by name each morning so I think that helps!

I do the same as Sbkangas, but also play Who Stole the Cookie from the Cookie Jar? each day at snack.

We also have this silly game the kids love. Divide the class into two teams. They sit opposite each other with a chair in front of each team. My aide and I hold a blanket up between the two teams. One kid from each team sits in the chair. On the count of 3, we lower the blanket. It's a race between the two chair kids to name the other one. If the first guess is right, that kid goes to the opposite team and we play again; if the guess is wrong, the guesser goes to the other team. No one ever really wins, but they learn each others' names and have a blast moving between teams.

I hope that made sense. It's hard to describe.

During Show-n-Tell, each kid stands for his/her presentation and then asks, "Any questions?" and calls on a kid with their hand up. This helps them learn classmates' names, but also gives them a chance to explore the difference between a question and a comment.

Try Shari Sloane's site. Scroll down and look the menu on the left for name activities. My kids enjoy the one where we sit in a circle and the person in the middle has to go find the person I name from my list. It has helped me too. I have 2 Jesus and an Elijah and an Elisha.

We do a lot of name learning during morning meeting. All the greetings for the first month have to do with names. I also tell them it is simply ok to ask.

We do a chant/cheer at morning meeting time:
1, 2, 3, 4.
Come on -child's name-
Hit the floor.
We're so glad you're here today.
We just want to shout, "Hooray!"

We also play guessing games like Doggie, Doggie, Where's Your Bone?

I'll also pick two students at a time to stand and greet each other by name. Then they give a high five, handshake, or fist bump.

Here are some other ideas.
