I have attached a Math About Me work sheet. Have students complete as best they can and the rest is homework.

Then have them come to the rug for a discussion on the rug. Ask if they can get through one day without numbers? You can make a class chart of all the things that happen each day that include numbers.

How would the bus driver find their home without the numbers in the address?
Paying for lunch involves money and numbers.
They are in third grade. 3rd is an ordinal number.

.....

You get the idea. Numbers are all around us. They are in our daily lives and we need to understand how to use numbers. It is called MATH.This gives the students a good starting place for a year of math.

Math Picture Books

Math picture books are great during math lessons. On day two you could read How Much is a Million? Then continue the discussion of how numbers and math are all around us.

Here is a list of math picture books. I am sure you library has many of them.

http://childrenspicturebooks.info/ar...s_for_math.htm

After the read aloud you could send them back to their seat to draw a collage diagram of all the things they would buy if they had a million dollars. Ask them to label each item. Then share. This would make a great get to know you activity and get them excited about math.

Find out what they know

Give an addition and subtraction fact test to see what they know. I gave mine 50 facts on a worksheet. I gave them five minutes to see how fast they could recall their facts. I asked them not to skip around. Then I red lined where they stopped after 5 minutes. Then I asked them to complete each sheet. After grading these I knew which students needed to work on learning their facts.

Then I introduced the text book and started lessons.

Good luck!
