Do you expect well developed fine motor skills at the beginning of Kindergarten?

I do not. I fully expect the need to teach printing, coloring, cutting and gluing.

That's a huge chunk of our job, for crying out loud.

Nope. I know I'm going to have to teach it all.

My first year in kinder I did. Boy, was I surprised? I came from a private school where most of my Tk kiddos came up from preschool where they worked on those skills. Now in my new school. I teach "everything" explicitly as I have been advised again and again.

Nope - they are only 5! I expect that we will be strengthening them all year long.

I expect to work on fine motor skills all year. I agree with PPs-they are five year olds.

Thank you for your responses! I agree with you all completely. Unfortunately, others do not.

It seems as they push more and more down into kindergarten (the new first grade), they forget what is developmentally-appropriate for five-year olds. Child development hasn't changed, but we keep raising the expectations and taking away things that our children need and should be doing in order to fit everything they've added to the K curriculum into the day. Kindergarten teachers have had to be more and more creative on ways to keep our classrooms developmentally-appropriate for our younger students-especially when administrators or other people at the decision-making level don't have experience or a background in early childhood. We have to be advocates for our students. Things can look good on paper, but we know what it would actually look like in a classroom of five-year olds.

Fine Motor Bins

Being completely new to Kindergarten this year, I was surprised that I had to teach fine motor skills (never taught below Gr. 2). So I delved right in. I found this site (http://differentiatedkindergarten.co...ing-work-bins/) and holy moly does she ever have some good ideas. September bins are done and ready for the kiddos tomorrow.
