I had to giggle yesterday when reading a student's paper in my 3rd grade class. The word?
iball.

I don't usually see that one.

I've gotten ninja, clown, shoe...you name it...random words for letters and numbers.

Yep! And I love when you're doing the initial sounds and show them a picture of an animal. What does "dog" start with? Woof! What does "pig" start with? Oink! And they're so excited to know it!

Ha ha yep. I was doing a pre assessment on letters and one girl said coconut for O and Q and then surprisingly a few others!

What sound does this letter say? Kid: "mrrrrap"

She had some nutty (and incorrect) sound for all 26 letters. Such as "zoink!"

On the flip side, I had a student say rhombus when I showed him a diamond. That's a first for me! Then when I ask same student where he needs to put his paper, he looks at me like I am speaking a foreign language!

This is my first year in kindergarten and I love this. They come up with very inventive answers. I feel bad for my one little guy who was retained. He gets very upset with himself when he doesn't know the answers.

I was assisting with some 4K assessment (not the ideal situation--- I think it is much better for the child's teacher to do it, but beyond my control) and got the oinks, woofs, and a POP when asked about the sound that balloon starts with . When we came to the rat one little boy told me he just couldn't make the sound of a rat, but for Apple he was able to make a crunching sound . Another had all sorts of clinks, pops, beeps, and snorts for the letter sounds. Very difficult to contain myself! Gotta love 4 year olds

My favorite is I when I showed a student the letter X and asked him what letter it was. His answer: GAME OVER

NoKetchup, I love it!

This is why I love my kinders! I need to keep of list of answers like this when I have to discuss rigor with clueless non-kinder people.

Too funny! This is my first year in Kindergarten. I thought it was just my kids. I was assessing one student on rhyming words and he started telling me letter sounds. I kept saying I don't want sounds, but those sounds kept coming!

I'm a special ed teacher in Kindergarten and last year I was testing one of my students at the beginning of the year and she said random letters were fruits and vegetables. It was really weird but funny! Luckily she learned most of her letters and sounds by the end of the year

I have a Gen Ed kid this year who, in August, told me all the letter names were either "Jeff" or "jell." WTF? Hilarious.
