Which multiplication property first?

Which of these two multiplication properties do you introduce/teach first? Associative or distributive? Just curious about how others sequence these two. Looking forward to your response. THANKS!

Associative

I like doing associative first. The kids are used to changing the order of multiplication facts ("fact families") so I think that kind of buys a little credibility in their minds when we tell them they can change the groupings too. I think distributive is a little harder for some kids to wrap their heads around.

Good question, Elmspring. I'd also be interested to know if anyone has any particular tricks or tips!

I really hope others will respond!!!
In the past, I have went straight to the distributive property first because it seems to be a seamless transition from teaching arrays---breaking the array into two smaller arrays and thus, introducing the distributive property.
We have a new pacing guide this year, and the associative property is listed second in sequence after the commutative property...which goes against my "gut."
Therefore, I'm reaching out to the "pros" for your experience and sequence---just wondering which you do first...and the reasoning behind your sequence!!!
By the way, multiplication and division are my math favs!!!! 😃✖️➗

We do:
1. Commutative - so they understand they can multiply in any order.
2. Distributive - so they know they can break apart bigger numbers.
These both work well with arrays and we start them with arrays so they can see how/why it works.

3. Associative - We introduce and work with this last. As they work with the distributive property they start to see when they break up the array there are some combinations that are easier combinations to work with.

** After all three are introduced on a hands on level, then we introduce the mathematical notation.

Choppie - I like the thought behind this. About how long do you spend on each property?

We spend a few days on each strategy, but it really depends on how well the students are understand the concept.
