Classics tend to be higher reading level while still being age appropriate - Old Yeller, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, The Day No Pigs Would Die, Sounder, The Pearl, The Phantom Tollbooth, Black Beauty, The Call of the Wild, etc. Even classics with lower lexile levels also often have more complex themes than a lot of modern books at the same level and have interesting historical connections, both of which are valuable for advanced readers to wrestle with.
