In praise of Medicare

I don’t want to hijack the thread below, but I have been wanting to share our very positive experience with Medicare.

DH was diagnosed with cancer in the Kaiser hospital. Home Hospice was recommended (the oncologist said, “Chemo would kill him.”) and that’s what we did for 15 months. Medicare paid for every single aspect of his care (nurse visits, aide visits, medication delivered here, equipment, some consumable items, etc.). The Hospice team was fabulous and the Hospice company billed Medicare (it was $7000-$8000 per month). I never had to fill out 1 form. I will be eternally grateful to Medicare.

What a blessing for you so you could focus on spending time with your DH and taking care of yourself. The added stress of forms and cost would have been overwhelming. I had never heard of hospice caring for someone for such a long period. It's nice to know it is there and Medicare covered the cost. I hope you are doing well, Amiga.

Your story is encouraging. My dh sings the praises of just how efficient and easy it was to sign up. His supplement is blue cross and they were also great. Nice to hear that they follow through when times are tough.

Yes, my mom had hospice care for 16 months. They took care of the paperwork for Medicare. Never saw a bill...all paid for.

PT members have had good coverage with medicare. I also have used medicare for an emergency visit to the ER. It is a life saver for many of us. If not saving our lives, saving us from suffering from bills we cannot afford to pay.

Now all I read about the new budget and tax reform is that the government plans to take billions away from medicare, medicaid and there is also a plan to take money from social security. Scary times.

This is great to hear. I'm glad that Medicare covered everything, and you didn't have to think about any of it. It probably made a very challenging time a little more manageable.

I agree 100%!

amiga13, did your DH have supplemental insurance through Kaiser? I am on Medicare and have KP insurance through my retired teachers group. I haven't really used it at all since I'm pretty healthy, but it is good to know that you and your DH had such a great experience with them.

cvt, I’m not sure I understand your question—I’m not good at insurance. I think the answer is yes. He had Medicare and Kaiser Senior Advantage. I think Kaiser is the supplemental, right?

I know nothing about medicare, amiga, but I'm so glad to hear you had a positive experience with it. You've been through a lot and it's so good to see that you are doing well. Take care!
