Pop in conferences

No shows are common at our school and we expect to have some at parent-teacher conferences.
I was very surprised this year that we had so many parents just pop in. Everyone I talked to had at least 2. Why is this considered okay? I only prepare for the parents that set up appointments.

Now, I didn't turn either away. One was ESL so I understand. The other I told her I only had 5 minutes until my next scheduled appointment.

Is anyone else seeing more of these? I don't think I've had much of this in the past.

We do cattle-call conferences, so it's not an issue in my school.

However, I did see this when attending conferences for my own children in a different school.

Entitlement. Lack of consideration for anyone else.

My old district had that happen quite often.

Parents either would not show up at their schedules time, not sign up at all and show up whenever or show up before conferences were scheduled, but teachers were in the building.

We were obligated to meet with them.

We were also obligated to meet with parents whenever they showed. Before school, after school and during school.

I haven't seen this. What we deal with is parents who want to take off early for Thanksgiving since we have conferences on Monday and Tuesday that week and kids are out of school. As a parent, I would want to take off, too. But they all say, "I can come in the week before." Well, that means I have to have my stuff together the week before - which means giving up planning time and weekend to get done. And I still have to work those 2 days.

Not happening this year. I will meet with anyone after school the next week for a few short minutes. Not before, and not during my plan time.

more and more. And, the ones who pop in are the usually the ones that are so hard to get to come in that I feel like I better meet with them then, or I'll never see them. It feels like enabling, but when I have paperwork that needs to be signed, or a READ plan that needs to be initiated, I feel like I have to meet when they show up.

Gosh, I wonder how that would work with doctor appointments?

Used to happen to me a fair amount. It was really frustrating!
