ABC and Word Study Stations

HI Okay I am looking to see what type of activities you put in these two stations. I have them separated into two so one can be work with word wall words and the other can be with things we teach in our phonics lessons. I am looking for activities and the materials you use, b/c I don't want to be too repititious with either. We have a surf theme for our sport and I have 2 dryerase magnetic surfboards to use. Should I have one in each station or split them up? I have 2 kiddos to a station.

Thanks,

Scrambled Eggs Center - materials plastic Easter Eggs, Master Word List, and letter tiles in each egg to make one word.
The student refers to the master word list to unscramble the word in their egg. They then write down the word on their paper three times each. If you want to stay with your surf theme, you could write the words scrambled on surf board shaped foam or paper cutouts. You could even use a file folder decorated with a beach scene and place velcro or magnets the folder. The student can match the scrambled word with the correct word spelling.

That is a great idea! Thanks! So I would use the HFW from the word wall or word family words and stuff like that?

At my word work station, my students work on word wall words and spelling words. They spell the words with stencils, stamps, letter tiles and cards in a table top pocket chart. If I were you, I would probably put one dry erase board in each station.

I also separated my ABC and Word Study Centers this year.

We've only just started centers 3 weeks ago and it's my first time doing Reading Workshop (although I have been doing centers in a different format for about 10 years now)

Right now, in ABC Center, they have:
  • sorted upper and lower case letters
  • Sorted letters by type (short letters, tall letters, etc...)
  • made playdough letters
  • used magnetic letters to match lowercase with capital letters
For Word Study, we have:
  • used magnetic letters to stretch out rhyming words and record
  • unscrambled names
  • use word family slides, wheels, etc... to work on recognizing chunks - they record them and circle the chunks
  • I plan on having them work on sorting words by beginning sounds, ending sounds, vowel sounds in this center (using picture cards)
  • A big one that I plan on using often is making words which I have letter tiles
Those are the ideas for the immediate future.

We use the center for spelling words and/or word families.
