Clip to ScrapBook #1

teaching 5th grade for the first time in over 20 years (and don't even remember teaching about the colonies....)

i'm trying to figure out the leap between the colonies of Jamestown, Plymouth, Roanoake, etc.....to the 13 "original colonies". i'm not finding this in my social studies book.

i get that they aren't yet states...but how did we go from "city" colonies to the colonies in the larger sense?

thank you!!

Charters?

I haven't taken the time to actually look anything up. Too lazy--it's Thanksgiving weekend, after all. But I'm wondering if the charters that were granted covered an area (like a "colony or state"), rather than a specific site (as for a city).

With something like Plymouth, I believe that the included territory expanded over time and as the population increased.

That's actually an interesting question.
