We have all day PD tomorrow and let's face it, it's going to be a waste of time. I can't, for the life of me, understand why they do this to us. Give us the day to work in our rooms. Lord knows we never have time during the actual work day.

Oh well, I will have this out of my system before tomorrow.

We, thankfully, get a big chunk to work in our rooms. I am part of a group presenting to the staff, so I hope they find it useful. Should, since it is a new initiative in support of our STEM mission. The rest of our "training" looks like decision making on things that the p never has time for since her meetings aren't well organized.

or limping...

We go right back into our regular schedule tomorrow. The kids are usually so tired the first day back that it's a low key kind of day. January is a long month, but in first grade, it seems to be when we see the most growth.

Hope if you're back in the trenches with me, that your week goes quickly and the children behave!

We have a work day tomorrow. Fortunately it begins about half an hour later than our normal school day, so that's a nice transition.

Ours is analyzing iReady data with a district rep, then grade level collaboration...which will be primarily chit chat. I'd rather have students tomorrow.

High school gets a work day on Monday when we go back so they can enter grades from finals. Everyone else has kids.

In my district everything is about secodnary. Elementary is the red headed step child.

We have a PD coming up this month too. Secretly I'm hoping for a snow day or a delay which could throw off the times for the seminars.
We rarely get time to work in our classrooms. Unfortunately, too many teachers waste the time chatting, wandering the building, etc. and the administration has seen too much of that. We've tried....maybe I could even use the word 'begged'....to give suggestions of better PD topics or to be held accountable for working together as a department on tightening our curriculum. It's always given a "We'll think about it" and then we still get the guest speaker presenter Joe Schmoe from Idaho who probably has never taught in the classroom but has plenty of great ideas for what we could/should be doing in today's classroom.

(PS. I have nothing against Idaho. It's just a saying.)

Sing it, sister. It's the same here - we would all kill for the chance of a paid day just to work in our classrooms, but it's never going to happen.

I don't have to go back until next Monday. It's supposed to be a full PD day, but my principal is giving us the afternoon to work in our rooms because we're moving buildings next year and we're supposed to be "purging."

Last year, it was district-led PD the first day back and they invited someone who was supposed to be a guru about motivating students. He spent the entire time talking about how bad his own school experience was and slamming teachers, including calling on people in the audience to answer things and then going on about how wrong their answers were. It was so bad that the district actually sent out an apology letter the next day!

In previous years, the first day back was a PD day and the second day was a work day. For whatever reason, they put the work day as the last day before break this year. I definitely prefer having it after break.

We were supposed to have PD tomorrow, but they have called it off due to the extreme cold. (Which means they didn't have anything really important planned anyway!) We will be back with the students on Wednesday. I will probably go in to my room tomorrow anyway to get some things ready before the kids come back.

here in NC. The kids will be back and they'll go to lunch starting around 10:50. I live in the Sandhills of NC so when it gets in the teens with a wind chill the busses don't always start or the heat in the buildings.

We get Tuesday and Wednesday off (my poor husband has to work). Thursday and Friday are PD though I was told normally we get most of one of the days to work in our room. No schedule has been sent out yet. Kids come back on Monday. I wonder if it's our principal's way of easing us back into things. Our principals are also buying us lunch on Thursday as a late holiday present which is nice.

Our kids start tomorrow. The weather says it will be 1 degree when we arrive and a whopping 11 at lunch/recess time. I vote indoor recess as many kids do not come dressed for the weather.

We have a work day tomorrow, kids on Wednesday. We've been lucky to have that as a transition for the past couple years. We've been off since December 15th. I am thankful that we had a long break with my particular group this year.

Regular day tomorrow. I know it's wishful thinking, but I keep thinking how nice it would be to get to school in the morning to find out the heat is broken or something similar and our school is closed

We had a regular day scheduled, but it was changed to a work day because of weather. We have an agenda, but it's all work. Department work. Team work. Whole group work. No PD or fluff.

DH has a similar day. Their work day was already in their schedule.

This is probably off topic, but I have a question about the "three hour delay" some people have mentioed (and I've read about similar things over the years). How does that work? How do the kids get to school? What do parents that work (and presumably some have to go to work regardless) do about childcare?

This is something I have never heard of here, and I'm curious.

The buses run 3 hours later. Delay days are usually a mess...everyone is off kilter, many kids don't come at all, etc.

I guess parents just go to work later?

We have two hour delays quite often. It just means the buses run two hours later than they normally do. Most of my students go to day care in the morning, or their parents drop them off (mom's don't work, varying work schedules, etc) so it has never been an issue. Most delayed starts I have had perfect attendance.

Whoa! I'm just getting back to this thread and it's interesting to read what others have to do. We survived our PD day and I got a tiny bit done in my room since I went in early. I'd like to be more prepared, but I'll live. Good luck to everyone. Have a great week!!

Delays

Honestly, parents around here hate delayed starts. They are very common though. The buses just run 2 or 3 hours late. I think many younger kids are watched by older siblings or grandparents.
