Does anyone have a checklist they use for their school of skills that students must pass in order to be promoted to 2nd grade? Our first graders are a very low group across the board this year and we are considering retention for some of them. I've retained 1or 2 before but this year I have about 5-6 who have a long way to go before they are ready.

We don't use a checklist of must-have skills to enter the next grade. Instead we use Light's Retention Scale to help us make the decision.

We have two first grades and have never retained more than 1 or rarely 2 kids combined. Right now, we would be offering those 5-6 kids daily intervention with the Reading Teacher and afterschool help once or twice a week.

Are any of these kids ELL or on IEPs? We never retain those kids, since they will continue to receive services from the ELL or SpEd teachers.

Here's some research finding about retention you may want to investigate:

There's a ton, so feel free to pick and choose and skim to get various perspectives.
