Clip to ScrapBook #1

Only 28% of fifth grade students met or exceeded their rit in reading. I'm wallowing in my misery with a bag of chips.

We use Journeys and I see them 40 minutes a day for reading and spelling.

Advice?

I teach 6th, and I stopped using the Journeys book. I switched to Guided Reading and the kids are doing much better. A 1/3 of the NWEA for older grades is Literature. Journeys doesn't provide enough high quality literature or poetry for the kids at that RIT range.

We have 90 minute reading blocks and we aren't departmentalized, so being able to work with the same kids all day definitely has benefits too.

40 minutes a day isnít enough regardless of what program youíre using. You really need at least 60 minutes and 90 would be ideal.
