Clip to ScrapBook #1

Anyone ever do a Wax Museum? My team is doing one this year (maybe, my teammate wants to see what the kids produce first). I'm thinking I want to just let the kids choose someone they are interested in regardless of their reading level. My teammate makes them choose based on their reading level. How did you let your students choose? Or just what's your opinion on letting them choose?

Thanks!

I give them a list of people they can choose from and they pick who interests them. We do a book pass (they pass around different biographies and read the back and a few paragraphs) and they write down their top three choices. I try to find material for them that they will be successful reading on that person.

Last year I didn't give them a list and had a student who wanted to do Shakira. When I told her no, she went home and told her parent that I had said yes then changed my mind after she did all the work and the project was due. The parent called the superintendent and complained, The parent was trying to tell the superintendent Shakira's contribution was to make people happy .

Thanks for the input. I've never done one of these before. I did a combination of me putting a list up and them being able to suggest someone. It worked well.

Now for the hard part of actually researching and writing!

What a cool idea!

Do you have access to Pebble Go Science and Biographies? They have a huge selection of biographical articles that are not overwhelmingly long, but have the salient information in paragraph form. Most provide a glossary at the end, as well. There are pictures, timelines, and occasionally short videos. Students can read it online, listen to it be read to them, or you can print it off for students to read. This is where we always start research!

Iíd say be very clear about your rules so you donít have a Shakira. ;-) Include a rubric and provide a list or say they can choose anyone on Pebble Go (or other website).

I have never heard of Pebble Go. Is it a website? I have some of them on biography.com. Is that different than Biographies?

Thanks for all the help!

I have no idea what the cost is, but if you can find a school that has it, you might be able to use their link.

You can do a free trial: https://www.pebblego.com/info/trial.html
