Not reaching my students

Clip to ScrapBook #1

I have been teaching a long time but am struggling with my 5 th graders and math. Just gave a test on multiples and factors and grades were not good. They seem to understand in class, they do the homework but don't do well on the test. I need to get them back on track and focused. Feeling bummed. Any ideas to spark them?

By noticing the test grades are not good, you are realizing that there is a gap somewhere that needs to be filled.
Instead of giving large tests, I tend to give smaller quizzes so that it's not so overwhelming. That way I can also pinpoint exactly where they are having trouble.
Exit tickets are another good formative assessment that can help you figure out what's going on.
I also tend to incorporate several different learning styles in my teaching - visual, kinesthetic, etc. it really helps.
