Hello Everyone,

I wanted feedback on the pros and cons of teaching early childhood students. I am going back to school for my second Masters and have been teaching grades 3,4,5 and middle school Science during my 22 year career. I would love to work with younger kids but wanted to know about the challenges and rewards, perks, etc. of teaching this age group. Thank You!

I love early childhood. If you mean prekindergarten students be sure to check to see what the pay scale is. Some districts/states pay early childhood the same as elementary and many pay much, much less. Also, the ECFE teachers are mostly part time with no benefits in my district. Kindergarten is the same pay scale as elementary usually.

Prek does standardized assessments on all children using an ipad. It does seem to be a little less testing than kinder. Prek and kinder students are very active so you need to change activities often. It is very different than the upper grades.

Hello,

Thank You for your quick response. I will definitely check with my principal to find out the pay scale for pre-K, I believe the pay is the same as elementary teachers.

How long have you taught Pre-K, and what does a typical day look like? I live in Michigan and ECE is a critical shortage area. I would love to learn more from you about teaching kids at this age.
Again thank you for your feedback.

I taught Early Childhood Special Education for 22 Years and absolutely loved it. This was in a public school and salary was the same as the K-6 teachers. When I taught in Day Care settings pay was not much more than minimum wage. If you search Preschool Schedules on here, there are several posts that address this.

Hope this helps! Best wishes!

I taught prek for 28 years. We had two half day sessions. Each class was two and a half hours. We were only in session during the regular school year( not summers or school vacations). My schedule was one hour of playtime which is very important. For play time I had many different centers set up(blocks, house area, painting, art, puzzles, etc.). We went outside for about 10-15 minutes every day in the fall and spring and one day a week in the winter (putting on snowpants etc. takes a long time-leave at least 20 minutes the first time it snows to put on winter gear). We also had large group, small group and math time.

My usual schedule
group time
art project/fine motor
math (calendar etc.)
small groups
play time
outside

Have a great year!

Hello Oniongirl:

Thank you for your response. I was wondering if you use visual aids to help students understand class rules? If so not what are your classroom management strategies?

Yes, I use visuals for almost everything. We use a social skills program to teach behavior. We use the usual things-teaching, modeling, take a break chair, parent conference or phone call, rewards ect.

When I taught pre-K

it was a focus on teaching them how to learn rather than what to learn. Students each have a learning style and helping them learn how to learn through their strength was important. That was really different than what I did at other grade levels.

The pros of teaching preK- the kids are just so connected and attached to you as the teacher. You don't have a minute to yourself.
The cons of teaching preK-the kids are just so connected and attached to you as the teacher. You don't have a minute to yourself.
