Can your 2nd Graders tie shoes

Iím used to having to double tie and un-knot shoes and all that good stuff. This year though I have several kids that canít tie their own shoes AT ALL. I thought kids were supposed to come into second grade tying shoes.

The only child I've had who couldn't tie her own shoes was a child that the mother did it (and everything) for her. Mom (and child) were the most entitled (and unstable) people I've ever had the misfortune to deal with! I hope your situation is better.

I put up with the shoe tying for a few weeks, but then I call upon any other kids in the class who are shoe tying experts to tie shoes for their peers. It works well.

I agree with Song Of Joy. I tell them to ask a friend to help them tie their shoe.

I used to assign it as weekend homework until they learned.

This is my first year teaching second grade and the tying of shoes is driving me bonkers! I have 2-3 students who I am CONSTANTLY having to tie their shoes. I like the idea of having a friend do it for them.

Shoe tieing

I would tell my kids "I'll tie your shoes once. From then on, you're on your own. Learn or get a friend to do it." By second grade they should know.

I use to tie them more until a votes her said "you realize where those laces have been, right? Playground, kid's mouth, bathroom floor..."

I had a kid one year that couldn't tie and was forever tripping on them. After a few times I told him I wouldn't do it anymore. Parent called me as was upset that I wouldn't tie his shoes, said it was a safety hazard. I agreed....and said therefore he should learn to do it himself.

Mom then sheepishly said "We started to teach him but he got frustrated so we stopped."

I told her he had two options learn to tie them himself or get a friend to tie them.

Turns out he was highly embarrassed to be the only one of his friends who couldn't tie shoes. Following Monday, mhe could do it.

Tie shoes?

In 2nd grade? Umm....no. I haven't had to deal with that. Most kids are too embarrassed not to be tying shoes by 2nd grade. I tied a few when I taught K5, but even then, I had their friends to tie it for them. That's usually what I do, get a friend to tie it for them.

Trade-off

I think shoe-tying is one of those skills we've traded for early literacy. Kids learn so much now in a different order than they used to. And while I personally think the old way had more advantages, I don't think things are going to revert.

If you have classroom jobs, you could make one"official shoe-tier" and only let kids who do know how apply.

That invention was awesome, but has caused our parents to have a cruch to fall back on instead of teaching their child to tie their shoes. Most of my class can't tie their own shoes. I tell them to find a friend who can help.

I always tell my kids they cannot pass to third grade if they haven't learned to tie their own shoes. Then I tell them to find a friend who will teach them during recess. Seeing my kids walking down the hall dragging their shoestrings drives me crazy!

But most can. It just seems that my kids can't tie them tight enough! I also ask peers to help tie and they're more than willing to help out. The thing I find the most maddening is that the laces on these kids' shoes are sooooo long! No wonder they can't stay tied.

All of my second graders can tie their own shoes. If they couldn't, I would buy the Melissa and Doug wood lacing sneaker and have them practice when they finished their work.
