Update on DH post stroke
Old 11-06-2018, 11:49 AM

Clip to ScrapBook #1

Some of you may remember my DH had a brain stem stroke in mid-August. He spent eleven days in a university med center and then 28 days at an inpatient rehabilitation hospital. We've been traveling 90 miles to the rehabilitation outpatient center for PT three days a week and he's made such encouraging progress. He is walking with a walker and we haven't used the wheelchair for a week! He's not able to walk independently and has significant vision issues but we're seeing progress. He deals with periodic episodes of dizziness (scares me silly) that make being alone risky. I was so concerned that DH would have a limited recovery but we're hopeful that most of his physical abilities will return within a year. It feels so good to share the good news.

Tell him to keep up the hard work and I hope he continues to improve. Hope the two of you are managing to have some fun now and then. Smiles and laughter are the best medicine of all. It must be difficult with all that travel to therapy. Hang in there. Thank you for sharing your good news.

I'm grateful for his recovery. He has significant tremors and vision issues that most likely will not improve. He's realizing that he'll not golf again and that's a disappointment to him. In subtle ways, he's not the same cognitively but it's not disabling and he doesn't need therapy for that. Twenty-five percent of stroke victims don't survive so we're very fortunate. No medical professionals could tell me what to hope for in his recovery so I'm encouraged to see his life will, for the most part, be one of independence and that's enough.

I am so glad he is making slow but steady progress. My mom suffered a stroke and it was a long road back. And as you say, some things will never be the same. I'm so glad his mental outlook is positive, and I hope he finds a new passion to replace golf. Thinking of both of you and wishing you the best. Definitely something to be thankful for on Thanksgiving!
