I don't know if I like my schedule or not. There are some components that I feel are missing from kindergarten (like social development centers and naps), but I'm not allowed to add those in.

My Schedule:

8:15-10:30 ELA
10:35-11:00 Lunch
11:10-11:30 Recess
11:40-12:20 Specials
12:25-12:55 RTI
12:55-2:15 Math
2:15-2:45 Science/Social Stuides
2:45-3:00 Closure/Dismissal

8:40-9:30 Self Selection (aka Free Play)
9:30-10:15 Calendar/Math
10:15-10:30 Snack (served family style)
10:30-10:45 AM Recess
10:45-12:15 ELA
12:15-12:30 Read Aloud/Wash up
12:30-12:45 Lunch
12:45-1:15 Lunch Recess
1:15-2:15 Thematic (aka Science/Social Studies)
2:15-2:30 PM Recess
2:30-3:30 Pull Outs (PE/Music/Library)
3:30-3:40 Pack Up/Dismissal

It makes me sad you don't have time for free play and your recess schedule is also sad to me. Your lunch is so early! Do you do snack in the afternoon?

Clip to ScrapBook #3

8-8:30 Fine motor play/free art
8:30-8:50 Morning meeting
8:50-9:30 ELA centers
9:30-9:50 recess
9:50-10:10 ELA
10:10-10:55 PE (dance on monday)
10:55-11:20 ELA
11:30-12:15 lunch & recess
12:15-12:30 quiet time
12:30-1:30 calendar & math
1:30-1:40 recess
1:40-2:10 ELD
2:10-2:25 story, catch up, whatever
2:30 dismissal

Except Fridays are totally different - and we generally do field trips on Fridays so skip the morning stuff if we do.

9:15-9:30 all school flag raising
9:30-10:20 morning meeting & centers
10:20-10:30 recess
10:30-11:20 science
11:30-12:15 lunch & recess
12:15-1:30 free play & art
1:30-1:40 recess
1:40-2 library
2-2:25 sharing
2:30 dismissal

You need play! I would find a way to sneak it in because it is so so important. I also can't believe they go from 11:30-3 without a recess. I think I'd be taking them out on my own. That's way too long to be in the classroom and focused. In my room we have way more play & free time, as well as way less paperwork, screen time, and needless crafty things, than the other 4 kinder rooms on campus. And my kids come out knowing all of the same things academically as every other class. And we generally have fewer behavior problems than everyone else as well.

Absolutely not an option, as much as I wish it was.

A. The playground is booked for basically the rest of the day.

B. Admin is frequently in our rooms.

B and a half. Admin checks our schedule when walking in to make sure we're on schedule.

We do not do a snack.

My principal set my schedule. I don't have any breaks in the morning.
I am a Gen Ed teacher, but some of my students go to the Resource Center. This was the only way she could get my schedule to work with the RC teacher's schedule. So my entire morning, lunch, recess and specials are set in stone. I did have a little flexibility with planning out the afternoon.

We don't have any snack time and I wish I could take a nap. I am exhausted by the end of the day.

I too was confused about your lack of recess and play. If I heard a school was enforcing that schedule, I absolutely would not send my kid there I'm sorry you have to deal with that.

Much sympathy to you for having admin who checks on your schedule too. Talk about micromanaging.

We do an hour of recess, plus eating time. This is our schedule

9:00- 9:20: Move to Learn. (brain science based movement activities)
9:20- 10:10- Literacy.
10:10- Fruito. (it's an Australian thing I think. 10 min break to eat some fruit & veg and hear a story)
10:20-11:10 Literacy
11:10- 11:20 Lunch eating time
11:20- 12:00- Lunch play. (recess)
12:00- 1:00- Maths
1:00- News/Read aloud/quick spelling mini-lesson- whatever works
1:30- Recess
1:50- Depends on the day. Science on Mondays, Art on Tuesday, Geography on Wednesdays, Music on Thursdays, Sport on Fridays
2:40- Developmental play. Except Thursdays, when we have our PDH (health) lesson
3:10- Home time.

Fridays are totally different though. We have our whole school assembly, time with our year 6 buddies, and computers, plus more free play than usual.

PS serious question-- why does lunch eating take so long in some of the schedules? My kids eat for 5 minutes (10 max) & run off to play! I can't imagine 20 or more minutes eating time.

Our lunch and recesses are separate. Mine HAPPEN to be back-to-back, but not everyone's schedule is like that. I could just as easily have lunch from 10:35-11:00 and recess from 2:00-2:20, if the master schedule worked that way.

Our lunch time does not include recess. They stay in their seats in the cafeteria until they are dismissed.

Then I guess you'd be homeschooling! My schedule is pretty similar to other schools in my area. I've taught in two nearby cities, and the schedules were similar there, too.

Ahh that makes sense. I forgot about cafeterias because I'm used to kids eating outside.

That's such a shame. Doesn't seem appropriate for 5 year olds. Guess I'll stay put

I don't like my schedule...

8:55-9:05 Breakfast in the room, morning news, unpacking, etc
9:05-9:30: Whole group reading
9:30-10:45: Small group reading, centers
10:45-11:00ish: Snack time, movement break
11:00-11:30 Writing
11:30-12:00 Content (Sci/SS)
12:10-12:40 Lunch
12:45-1:05ish: Recess
1:25-2:10: Specials

Pack up/dismissal

The morning is LONG and difficult for ME to get through without a break from the kids/teaching. And this is with a great class!

The recess schedules most of you have make me so grateful for mine. Granted, I probably have more recess duties than the rest of you, but I'll take that trade off.

It's pretty interesting to see how we structure our days--thanks for the thread, Gr8catsby.

I can't believe the lack of recess some of you guys have! What a tragedy! It makes me very thankful for my 3 recesses - and we don't have any recess duty at all. I think if I had three uninterrupted hours in the morning I would have a play break in the middle.

And 30 minutes of sitting for lunch. Yikes! The cafeteria must get crazy!

I mean, whenever my kids are at recess I'm on recess duty. I don't know if you're saying you're on duty whenever your kids have recess. It's not like we have any additional time/no time with supervision.

No, I don't have every recess duty. There are 24 recess duties in a week. I have 5 of them. Other K staff also have 5, so all recesses are covered, but not all by me personally. We used to have 29 in a week, but I petitioned admin to take over cafeteria duty.

My only duty-free time is my 25 minute lunch.
I have self-directed planning during specials 3 of the 5 days a week, but I wouldn't really consider that duty free. The other two days are meetings.

Gr8catsby, that sounds tough. I have an hour of recess and an hour of pull-outs daily (PE, Library, Music) plus an additional 2.5 hours on Wednesdays of kid-free plan/prep time. And I get a 45 minute lunch every day except Wednesdays because I have duty.

I wish I had a brilliant idea to make this better for you, but I don't. Our plan/prep time is protected by our contract, which the union fought hard for.

I agree, & have been thinking about this thread all day.

Today when I left the classroom at lunch I noticed all the kids backpacks were missing from the hooks. I was so confused! Turned out they had taken their backpacks out during lunch play to go on a "camping trip". They set off in a big crowd and walked all the way down to the oval to set up their 'tents'. It was so funny to see them all playing together in a big group and when they came back they were so excited to write about their 'camping trip'. It was all their idea and I just capitalized on it to get them writing. I feel like they would miss out on so much if they didn't have that time! Plus, they'd drive me crazy

You must have to be so creative to keep them on task during such long days. I truly admire you but also don't envy you!

Period 1 Outdoor Play

Period 2 Morning Meeting/Table Top literacy

Break....free flow snack

Period 3 and 4 Free Play

Break....lunch and carpet time

Period 5 Meeting/Table Top Math

Period 6 Outdoor Play

Our periods are 50 minutes, I have one period prep per day. There is either another teacher outside for outdoor play or they were taken out for library, and four gym periods. On those days my schedule may look a little different.

I teach in Ontario. Our kindergarten is a two-year program. Our play based curriculum consists of four frames——belonging and contributing, self-regulation and wellbeing , literacy and math behaviours, and problem solving and innovating. We do pull out small groups during the day. I’ll attach a graphic. I believe the graphic has the overall expectations.

My schedule
Old 11-26-2018, 10:20 PM

Clip to ScrapBook #25

8:10-8:25 I have morning duty on the playground.

8:25 First Bell

8:30-8:45 Morning tubs (basically free play, but with some fine motor/STEM etc. activities so I don't get "in trouble", sigh

8:45-9:00 Morning Meeting

9:00-11:00 ELA (whole group, small group, intervention, centers, writing, etc.)

10:15 or so we have 15 minutes of inside or outside recess where I stay with them, then we continue ELA

11:00-11:30 Social Studies

11:30 Clean up, Read aloud

11:45-12:15 Lunch/Recess (my lunch, too, so I don't have duty)

12:15-12:30 Rest (dump sand, restrooms, drinks, watch a little Alphablocks, read a story)

12:30-1:30 Math

1:30-2:15 Science

2:15 Clean up, pack up

2:25-3:20 Specials (my prep time)

3:20 I pick them up from Specials and we dismiss at 3:25

Tuesdays and Thursdays we also have 30 minutes of computer lab time, I usually assess during this time

Wednesdays we dismiss at 1:15, so I teach Science in the morning

I don't mind our schedule. We had a lot of input into when we wanted to teach things. It's a long day, but since my school runs on a junior high/middle school minutes schedule, it is what it is. Kinder lost recess several years ago when our district decided that play was a waste of time. Arizona just passed a law requiring 2 15-minute recesses for grades K-3. Isn't it sad that it required legislation to bring recess back for 5-year-olds??? Our schedule is fairly flexible as long as we find a way to get it all in, so if something goes haywire in the morning, like an assembly or guest speaker, then we can wiggle some things around.
