Sewing: Cork Wallet

Clip to ScrapBook #1

This is a downloadable pattern with instructions for the Lucky Penny Wallet from Sallie Tomato Blog. The pattern is free but you must "purchase" it in order to download it. Instagram photos are HERE. I don't know why it looks like it's in Russian. I didn't look at all of those photos first. I wish I had. I like the ones with a layer of cotton fabric between the cork layers. I also like how some people put a zipper in the top slot which would allow for coins. I might also advise to put the strap for closure closer to the bottom edge of the wallet. Once the wallet is filled, it's more difficult to stick the top edge under that strap. Also, according to the instructions, the middle section is open at the top and bottom of it with suggestions to keep your phone or checkbook there. Both of those (individually) made the wallet too thick to be able to close with the strap. So, I did sew across the top of the middle section so that the wallet has openings in both directions at the bottom slot.

Cork Fabric

Clip to ScrapBook #5

I have a close-up showing the fabric backing on the cork piece. I did use a non-stick foot on my machine but I don't know that it was really necessary. Here are some links to information and sources of cork fabric: Sew Many Creations, Sew Sweetness, Sallie Tomato. I was recently out of state and went to a specialty sewing/quilting store and they had some pre-cut pieces. I bought the piece I used for this. I figured I wasn't paying for shipping that way.

Do you have an embroidery machine with a hoop?
I try to watch It's So Easy on PBS and they made a cork wallet recently on an embroidery machine.

I haven't made anything in cork yet but I know it is the new big thing.

Your wallet looks wonderful.
Does the fabric feel "brittle" or stiff.

I am beginning to think there isn't anything you can't do --- and do well. I love looking at all your projects. Keep posting.

I looked up that video and watched it last night. I do not have that kind of an embroidery machine. I noticed how much trouble she had taping the back of the clutch in place, over the strap, to have outer edges even. They didn't show that part of the stitching and didn't show that bag in the showcase photo. I kind of wondered why they'd bother to use the embroidery machine to make this clutch (except for the embroidered portion) as it was all straight stitching.

The cork fabric is not brittle or stiff. The cork layer is extremely thin -think of a veneer. The fabric layer it is bonded to is at least 3 times as thick as the cork portion.

Thanks for your kind words!
