Thanksgiving

Does anyone have a wonderful Thanksgiving project they would like to share? I'm looking for a meaningful writing assignment which could be coordinated with an art project.

I'm bored with the projects I've done in the past and hope to find something new.

Thank you!

Last year when I taught 3rd grade we made a class book called "The Adventures of Thomas the Turkey". Each child drew out of a hat to be assigned the chapter that they would write. The chapter could be about anything as long as Thomas the Turkey was the main character. The kids got SO excited about this project and there writing reflected how hard they worked. It turned out really cute

I have the kids bring in ads from grocery stores with all the Thanksgiving foods. I have the kids predict how much Thanksgiving dinner will cost and then we dig through ads to find out how much it actually does cost. It's a little advanced for them (price per pound, etc) but it's still very fun.

Pilgrim or Indian

I did this one year and it was so fun!! (We actually did it schoolwide K-6) The students traced each other and made life size pilgrims or indians based on what they wanted to be. The writing assignment was would you rather be a pilgrim or indian and why? We read lots of pilgrim and indian books before hand so they would have background knowledge. It is a very time consuming project so start early but so worth the time.
Email me if you have quesiton.

This sounds like fun! Did you have patterns for Pilgrims and Indians? About how long did it take? (I should probably start soon). Did the kids follow a persuasive writing form? I'm also curious-which one did most of the kids pick?

Are you familiar with Evan-Moor pocket books? They have one for the first Thanksgiving. I've been using it for several years and the kids and parents love the end product. There are three pockets with a variety of activities including art, writing, geography, and reading, all teaching about the first Thanksgiving. I bought it at our local teacher supply store but I know you can find it on line as well. Happy Thanksgiving!

I just want to make sure I understand...in the chapter does Thomas have different adventures or is it a whole story! Why did they draw ofout of a hat!
