classroom library books for below grade level readers

Hi,
My third grade class of 18 is the most academically challenged group I have had. They are also quite young with 2 children who are still 7 and eight students who have recently turned 8. NWEA testing and running records show 4 children meet the benchmark in reading. Most concerning is 12 students scored below the 25th percentile. Yikes! Only 3 of these students are receiving SpEd services.

There is obviously much to do, but this post is regarding advice on expanding my classroom library to include interesting yet appropriately leveled books for all of my students.

I am looking for recommendations for chapter books for third graders at DRA levels 10-24 (F&P F-L.) I have had huge success in the past with struggling readers when we find a series or author of interest. Ebay has been a great source of used book lots for great prices. I love the excitement in my classroom as we await the arrival of these books.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Pinky and Rex

Take a look at Pioneer Valley Books. They have easy chapter books. You can read them on-line before you purchase.

From this publisher, look for Bella and Rosie/Jack and Daisy, which are very popular with my school's third graders.

The third graders also like Ricky and Buster, Jasper the Cat, Super Sam, Tidbit and Morsel, Reginald the Stinky Dog, Arctic Adventures, Clarence the Dragon, Gilbert the Pig, and Marshmallow the Pony.

Cynthia Rylant's Henry and Mudge series is great.

Dav Pilky's Ricky Ricotta series, the Dogman series, Captain Underpants and more are big favorites with 3rd graders.

Try scholastic book wizard. Interest level and reading level are two separate filters. Iíve had good luck with finding hi-lo books this way, especially for boys. It seems much easier to find hi-lo books for girls.

Scholastic has multiple series off books in their “Branches” books. They are early reader chapter books with really engaging, colorful pictures. My kids love them! Some of them are third grade level so just check the levels.
