Who has to go back Thursday?

I think it is a bit crazy to have school Thursday and Friday.
1. Teachers deserve a longer break
2. Lots of kids won't be back because families took extended vacations or are skiing.
3. It takes a day to get settled in again and then poof its Friday and the week is ending.
It is snowing. icing, freezing rain here and suppose to go into Tuesday. I feel so sorry for the city teachers who vacation ends on New Years Day.

Going back

I am retired but most schools go back Wednesday. Probably because of snow days, which we have not really had yet! My grandchildren in New York do not go back until next Monday.

Districts in my area get a solid 2 weeks off. They go back on Monday, January 6th. Kids go back on the 7th.

I'm in NJ, my school goes back Thursday.....not sure how attendance will be buy since I am a non-classroom teacher ( I teach RTI to students in grades 1 and 2) I'll use the time to prep for next week if my kids aren't in.

I go back Thursday... We usually only get 6 days off for Christmas, so 8 days seems like a luxury.

Not much to prep for because we have assemblies both Thursday and Friday!

Me. And I am getting the same sleet/ snow/ rain storm you are. The only somewhat good point about going back Thursday and Friday is you don't have to start with a full week. However I agree it's kind of pointless, but at least it counts as two days.

My district will...

I am retired now, so it does not affect me, but my former district will go back Thursday. I can only imagine how crazy it will be trying to get the kids back into the regular routine. Good luck! In all fairness though, it was a longer break than they usually get, probably because this year's calendar has no snow days built in. They will just add the days to June. so they had more room in the calendar to create a longer break now.

Unfortunately, my district believes more days on the calendar creates more days of learning. The average person in the public thinks teachers get too many breaks now, and as evidenced by when my district got rid of the February Break years ago, parents will take their family vacations during the school year whenever they want.

Me! Going back Thursday and dreading it. Seems so pointless, I can't really start anything new like spelling or reading unit. Also, skiing starts Friday so 9 of my kids will be leaving after lunch on Friday. Guess we'll work on New Year Goals and Mystery Science.
We also don't get MLK Day off, they took that away from us last year, ugh!

I go back Thursday. While I would definitely enjoy having both Thursday and Friday off, I am trying to look on the bright side: it will only be two days and then the weekend will be here; the two days will be enough time for students to get back into the swing of things; and when Monday rolls around, we will be able to hit the floor running. I doubt attendance will be too much of an issue. Families are pretty good about scheduling things so students are in school when it's in session.

Yep, going back Thursday. But, like other posters have said, it's easier to start back with just a couple of days until the weekend....oh well, hoping for one good blizzard this year

DH and I both go back on the 7th with kids. The 6th is a PD day for both of us.

I was really surprised that I got that much time off. It is typical for DH's district, but my district misses a ton for snow and flooding. We have already missed three days.

We go back Thursday, and our last day of school was the Wednesday before Christmas. One of my coworkers commented that it's nice not doing a full week when the kids are bonkers before break, and let's them ease back in with the two days.

Almost all schools in my area go back on Thursday. Thank goodness my school goes back on Monday. This is the first time in a long time that we have 2 full weeks.

Teachers go back next Monday and students don't start again until next Wednesday. We have a work day on Monday and then PD on Tuesday. We always have that sort of set up. It's nice to ease back into work without kids!

Iíve been grumbling about going back Friday for PD/ work time. We get kids Monday. Thank you for giving me good perspective and a better attitude.
I hope that those who go back earlier have a smooth transition and lots of coffee!

All the schools around here go back tomorrow (Thursday) as well. In a way, it would be nice to wait until Monday, but there are some advantages, I guess:

It gets all the excitement of seeing their friends again out of the way, so by the time we do get to Monday, it's a "real" day.

It gives them a couple of days over the weekend to recover from changing their sleep schedules back. I find when they start back with a whole week, they're fried by the end.

Those of you who go back Thursday have two less days to get in at the end of the school year.

I might prefer going back on Thursday. The shorted break would be awful but a 2 week work would be nice to ease in. I hate going from no work to a full work week. By Friday I'm so exhausted that I feel like I didn't even have a break.

I could see how it would be super weird though to do review, then feel like you have to do those routines again on Monday since they just had a weekend and a lot probably weren't even there anyways.
