Thanksgiving Activities?

Do you do a lot of Thanksgiving crafts? A lot of the other teachers aren't doing much. I have a turkey glyph and I will have them write what they are thankful for but I feel bad I am not having them do anything fun. Anyone doing anything fun?

Snazzy Snack Recipe for fun

We're going to make these on Wed afternoon. Since we've learned how Squanto and the Wampanoags helped teach the Pilgrims to plant corn. We actually have testing in the a.m. and so I definitely wanted to do something kind of fun and simple for the p.m.

"Helpful Squanto’s Snack"

Ingredients:
4 Oreo cookies
3 candy corns
3 goldfish crackers- fish

Supplies:
Clear cup
Spoon
Ziploc bag

Directions:
Put 4 Oreo cookies in a Ziploc bag and crush them.
Pour the crushed cookies into a clear cup.
“Plant” 3 candy corns and 3 goldfish in the “dirt”.
Eat with a spoon.

Last year we made turkeys out of a toilet paper tube but won't this year. We're actually making Stone Soup Wed. after doing a couple of activities with the story Mon. and Tues. We're tying it in with a plant unit in reading and science and I'll tie it into the Pilgrims. We also play some traditional Pilgrim and Indian games I found in a book. They get a huge kick out of this every year.

We're just making construction paper turkeys to put on a card for their parents. We have all half days this week, so there really won't be time for much.

Garnet, can you share the Pilgrim and Indian games, or where to find them? That would be fun for Morning Meeting. Linda, that is a really cute activity. I was just going to make my kids turkey cookies, but I might do that instead.

Edible Turkeys

We are going to make edible turkeys on Tuesday. They are not very healthy but they are fun. I also tie it with our curriculum with a test.

Moon Pie= turkey body
Nudder Butter cookie= head
choc. chips=eyes
gummy worm= wattle
candy corn=feet
Five tooth picks are stuck into the marshmallow filling.
Each tooth pick has four colored mini marshmallows. This makes the tail feathers.

This is their Thanksgiving snack instead of a party. We are not allowed to cook at school. The parents are not allowed to send foods that they have prepared at home .

Pilgrim & Indian games

I have my book at school and just looked at posts tonight. Let's see what I can remember off the top of my head.

1. hide the bean under 1 of 3 walnut shells --you know, the old magic trick, I usually put a few of these out and they play with a partner

2. take a paint stick (probably should be one from outside but...) decorate 1 side only. they toss it and get a point if it lands decorated side up

3. take 4 sticks (I use popsicle sticks) place on closed fingers (palm down) toss the sticks and try to catch as many as you can

4. stone poison--played outside, it's tag but the stones are safe

5. hop,skip,jump--they start at one point, take 3 hops on 1 foot, take 5 skips--amazing how many have trouble skipping, then take 1 broad jump. see who gets the farthest

6. take 2 sticks again, put tape on one end of 1, hide behind their backs and their partner has to guess which stick has the tape.

7. And the ultimate favorite----I tie a small piece of cardboard with a large center hole to a stick. they have to "spear" the "fish". get the stick in the hole.

These are done in center type formation and they play for about 5 minutes each. Obviously, these can be adjusted in any way but they really love doing these especially since they think it was so boring then!

Hope this is clear enough, let me know if you need anymore clarification.
