Clip to ScrapBook #1

I am working on my MLS and have an assignment for a class that is creating a unit for secondary students using an inquiry based model. I teach elementary so I am way outta my league with ideas for how to approach this and choose a subject to create the unit in. Of course if has to have common core standards and AASL standards. Does anyone work at the secondary level that might give some resources or ideas for what type of lesson I could create? I am open to whatever ideas you may have. It can be any subject, topic, etc. I just have to use those standards and discuss how I would utilize the library to teach the lesson.

Thanks!

Hi Tigers,

In a normal year, I work with the 8th grade social studies teachers on a civics project. Students find an issue in the school that could be changed, poll students, write petitions, and meet with the principal to present their proposals. For example, a few years ago the 8th grade wanted to change a lunch procedure, and came up with a better method. They polled the students, wrote petitions, got them signed, wrote a proposal for the principal and met with him, resulting in the change.

We also have students find a current news article, and match it to one of the Amendments. We (the staff) collect newspapers for a week or two before we start, so the students can have up to date articles; students can also use the databases to find articles. Once they find an article, they find connections to one of the Amendments, and analyze how and why. I wish we could do this in person this year - so many connections to so many Amendments!

Those are some great ideas! Thank you for your input! I like the idea of using the databases to search for articles, definitely helps with researching skills.
