Clip to ScrapBook #1

In December a local sewing shop gave every customer a sealed envelope to return (unopened) in January to reveal the prize. One prize would be a new sewing machine. So I went in January figuring I would bring home my new sewing machine , but instead my prize was a choice of patterns from a table. There really weren't any that I particularly wanted, so I took the most expensive one with the thought that if I was going to have a prize it might as well be an expensive one! It was called Captain Steve's Fish. Since the pandemic I have a lot of time on my hands and decided to make one of the fish. I liked it and made the second one, then the third and fourth. All done on the embroidery machine. I really had no plans of what to do with them when they were finished (measure about 16" each) I had also been planning to take another Craftsy class called Stitch and Slash. In that class they were making a pillow, but I don't really need any more pillows so I decided to make a wall hanging to match the colors in my fish. I now have a new arrangement on my sewing studio wall!

Those fish are beautiful! How long did it take to make each one?

Really cool! Looks like they were fun to make. Too bad your prize wasn't a new mat!

They do take a while to make because they are made in pieces which then are sewn on top of each other. The number of pieces ranged from 9-12 depending on the fish. The nice thing with embroidery work is that once it is programmed in the machine it is pretty much hands free except for thread changes (which I get alerts on my phone). So I can do other things around the house while it is being sewn. I donít like to go too far from the machine though in case there would be a problem.

So, to answer your question, each one takes probably 3-5 hours start to finish (rough estimate)

I have new mats ordered. They were back ordered so it might be a week or so. I am trying Quilters Select mats. The local sewing shop swears by them.

Those are really neat! Is the embroidery of the fish done on a base fabric? If so, do you start with a solid color?

Yes, the embroidery is done on fabric. I used mostly batiks (because I simply love batiks! ), but truthfully, very little shows through because it is heavily embroidered. The amount of fabric needed is basically pieces from my scrap bins.
