Purpose of Homework

I would love to get Grade 3 teacher's honest opinions on the function of homework.
I currently check off homework after reviewing the assignments carefully with students. They do a page in class very similar to the page sent home. We also review the homework before it goes home.
I hate grading homework! I just briefly review it for completion.
What do other teachers do?
Grade it in class as a group?
Thank you so much for advice!!!

It builds responsibility. It gives students a chance to practice a skill at intervals that help the concept to sink in. I have cut back my homework assignments since the pandemic. I give a math worksheet that reinforces what we did in class and ask the students to read. I do correct the math, so I can give feedback and assess their understanding and know when to reteach.

And a reading assignment from a book of a certain genre that weíre studying, a book from their GR group, or a whole class novel. 8-15 pgs or 1 or 2 chapters depending on the book and their reading ability.

I gave homework, but never graded it. We went over it in class. I just gave math and to read for 20 minutes. I also was one who believed it built responsibility, reviewed concepts, etc. I was getting tired of fighting the fight, not having it done, keeping them in for recess, which I knew was a bad idea, but...

Then I attended the most amazing training ever. It was poverty simulation put on by my county ROE. One of my teammate's and I did it. It was life changing. I still, 6 years later, think about it. In that moment I decided to stop homework. My team mate did too.

I wasn't seeing enough benefits from homework and the training combined with the discussion after just solidified it for me. The results were amazing; it made my relationships with my students and parents better, took a TON of stress and frustration off of me, and just generally made teaching life better. I've never looked back. I encourage kids to read 20 minutes and practice their facts, but that's it.

The kids were going to do their homework do it, and the ones that never did homework, don't do it.

Greyhound Girl, Iím with you this year. I have decided to give things to study and thatís it. I may give one written homework in January because the next grade teachers give a ton of homework and I have to gradually build up their stamina. I may start by giving three choices and they choose one a week. The same kids do it every night and the same kids donít. I choose to not have that battle any more.

We donít assign homework. It doesnít count towards their academic grade. We can only grade based on what the students do in class.

If a student is doing hw for practice and is doing it incorrectly that does no good.
