Hello,

How strict are you guys in regards to your circle times? This is in a pre-k (4-5 yr old) classroom.
Do you let them use the bathroom in the middle of circle? Or get water?
Also when they want to talk or contribute in circle do you let them call out or teach them to raise their hand?

I am retired now but was a specialist in Literacy and had Kindergarten classes. We always sat in a circle while I read. Students needed to raise their hands to use the bathroom, and I always let them go. They could not go to get water since there were no fountains located in the area. If there had been I'm not sure I would have let them go on my short time. Students were told to raise their hands if they wanted to contribute to our lesson. I did not let them call out, if they did I reminded them the rule and did not let them immediately answer. To me students needed to ask permission by raising their hands so they were not doing whatever they wanted to do whenever they wanted.

I'm in K, but I always let them use the bathroom. However they may not get water during instruction. I also teach them to raise their hand. Calling out becomes a terrible habit and one that will have to be squashed when they get to K.
