Clip to ScrapBook #1

Iím currently an Reading Interventionist, and Iíve been thinking about working towards a Dyslexia Specialist Certification from the Center for Effective Reading Instruction. I was wondering if anyone has gone through this certification process and has advice about which training program to use? Iíve been looking at all their accredited plus programs that include the needed practicum. I may have narrowed it down to an online program through Neuhaus Education Center or Lexercise, but wanted to know if anyone has recommendations about any programs for this?

I have been certified through The Dyslexic Institute in so cal which is fully accredited by Orton Gillingham. I would check to see if your choices award full accreditation through the OG method. They are very selective. Some programs say "incorporate" the OG method but do not fully embrace the methodology with fidelity. Multi-sensory instruction is at the core front.

The program included an entire course on how brains of dyslexic individuals process or orientate the pathways of learning.

Also what helped connect all the dots for me was enrolling in the practicum part where you are monitored and evaluated on your performance of instruction with your tutorial student. I would not have been able to follow the progressions so accurately without my mentor monitoring my progress.

I completed the program last year and am using it now with groups of three as a part time reading intervention teacher. It's a great tool to have under your belt .

If you prefer upper grades I would recommend Structured Word Inquiry . Also a multi-sensory approach .

What reading programs are you currently using at your school?
