I'm sure that it works. But for some reason, the usual members have abandoned it. We didn't have the heated political disputes that I've seen elsewhere on PT, so I don't know what would have driven people away.

BTW, folks don't come here looking for jobs. We post here regarding issues and experiences we have in common as well as for support from those who understand the difficult nature of our job as substitute teachers. It's been a valuable help that I haven't found elsewhere.

I need all the sub advice I can get! I worked full time in an office before deciding to get back in the classroom. I retired in 2020.

Maybe this board can gain some steam this next year. I have found being a sub is kind of an odd spot to be in when advice is needed.

Hi! LuvsPixieDust, I also responded to your other post, but thought I'd add some things for you.
I've subbed pretty much full time for 6 years now. One of the hardest things about it is that you never know what you may encounter, and are often left to your own resources to figure things out. You learn to be flexible, resourceful, and creative in the process.

As for classroom management, I try to engage the students right away and establish a rapport and respect. Go over rules and expectations to set the tone, then use a system of rewards (e.g. team and individual points) to encourage positive behavior, but also be firm about penalizing poor behavior. Let them know you will report all to their teacher. Have some way of rewarding them, depending on what is feasible. Be firm but fair and consistent. Most importantly, enjoy your work and enjoy the students.

It will take time to adapt, but you will begin to pick things up as you go along. That's a nutshell version of some basics. Hope that helps.

I'm still here, not sure where everyone has gone. I've been subbing for about 10 years, mostly middle school. What grades will you be working with?
