Help! I need ideas for practicing extended response. I need appropriate text and sample prompts. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

I teach 3rd and 4th grade!
Thanks!
Chris

The best examples are from the Illinois State Board website. Although they only have 3 per grade level from the past three year's ISAT tests. They have sample answers that are scored. That is the only thing I have found and I have searched alot for them.

I have purchased a book with 17 stories with multiple choice questions and an extended response question for each story. I have modified some of the questions to sound more like ISAT questions. Seems to be helping, but am really frustrated with the lack of support from ISBE on how to teach these questions. The name of the workbook is called "Test Smart - for reading skills and comprehension - grade 4 " by Lori Mammen, published by ECS Learning Systems, Inc., Bulverde, Texas. This book also has practice tests for vocabulary and study skills, as well as the comprehension part. It is the best resource I have found so far.

and download released questions from your state. There are also tons of books available (better price for used books) on Amazon.com.

Good luck!

The types of prompts vary by state

but here is a link to an old NJ poem prompt

http://www.nj.gov/education/njpep/as...r4_writing.pdf

and an old NJ LA assessment (picture prompt and extended writing on a story)

http://www.nj.gov/education/assessme...ample/espa.htm

This second link is cool because they not only provide the test, they also show multiple scored student responses, with scorers' rationale.

Most states have similar items if you Google state name, grade level, and term "released assessments."

Here is some additional info. The California state site has some good prompt information as well and offers good sample prompts as well as anchor papers you can use as examples.
