Speaking of prepositions.....

Clip to ScrapBook #1

Does anyone know a good prepositions song? Our school switched curriculums last year, and somehow my 6th graders missed out on memorizing their prepositions. This is making it extremely difficult to teach prepositional phrases as modifiers. Anyway, your help is very appreciated!

I think that you can sing them alphabetically to Mullberry bush. I would give my students the list and broke them into groups. You have them come up with a way to sing them and they have to teach it to the class.

When I googled preposition song, I got several hits. I picked the one that was easiest for me to sing. It is sung to the tune of Yankee Doodle. Try Google!

Preposition Song to Battle Hymn Republic
Old 03-31-2007, 07:26 PM

Clip to ScrapBook #7

I learned this a long time ago in the fifth grade.

On, down, among, around, across, about, amid, between
Beneath, below, before, above, against, beside, behind
Beyond, without, for, from, into
Near, in, of, up, to, at
Over, through, until, under
Within, after, during

To the tune of the Battle Hymn Republic

I think that's all of the prepositions. If anyone else knows this song, please email me and tell me if it's correct. I can't find it anywhere and my own child has to know them all soon. His teachers don't teach anything with a song so he is having trouble remembering them.
thanks

Preposition Song
Old 04-24-2007, 05:01 PM

Clip to ScrapBook #8

This is the song I made up with the prepositions from "Easy Grammar" which I use as a guide for my grammar teaching.

About, Above, Across, After
Against, Along, Amid
Among, Around, Atop, and at
These are some prepositions.

Before, behind, below, beneath
Beside, between, beyond
By, concerning, down, (and) during
These are prepositions.

Except, for, from, past, since, regarding
Like, near, of (and) off,
On and onto, out and outside
In and inside, into.

Through and throughout, to and toward
Under, underneath,
Up, upon, until, within,
without, and finally with.

(“over” was inadvertently left out – my kids usually just add it on the end of the song as a type of verbal exclamation point. I also had to review that "and" is a conjunctions with some of the lower students. I have "and" typed in italics, too, but it didn't copy here that way.)

Here's one my teacher just taught us:

About, above, across, after,
against, along, among, around,
at, before, behind, below,
beneath, beside, besides, between,
beyond, but, by, concerning, (then),
during, except for, from, (and) in,
inside, into, like, near, of, off,
out, outside, over, past since through!

Prepositions

Clip to ScrapBook #13

here is a good song for prepositions
(Mine eyes have seen the glory. . .) Read downward by columns.

aboard---among---beside---for
about----around--between--from
above----at------beyond---in
across---before--by-------into
after----behind--down-----like
against--below---during---of
along----beneath--except--off

(Glory, glory, halleluiah. . .) Read downward by columns.

over-------to-------underneath----with
past-------toward---until---------within
since------under----up------------without
through-------------upon
throughout

(Second Verse-Glory, glory, halleluia. . .)

Prepositions come in phrases.
The phrases always end in objects.
Prepositions never work alone,
or they’re called adverbs!

hope that helps!
