MORE Test Prep Songs-English and Spanish
Old 02-09-2008, 07:38 PM

Clip to ScrapBook #1

Last year I posted some "Positive Thinking" Test Prep Songs that I came up with. They got a great response! (I just checked...650 downloads! Wow!)

This year I added another one, and I came up with some songs in Spanish. This first attachment has the original three 'songs' that are written to the tunes of (1) Twinkle, Twinkle, (2) This Old Man, and (3) Itsy-Bitsy Spider. The newest song is "Ready for the State Test" to the tune of "I've Been Working on the Railroad".

My students each have their favorites. I hope yours will, too!

Spanish Test Prep Songs

I was going to leave both pages together as one, but I know that not everyone would need both Spanish and English.

This second attachment has the Spanish songs. For those who speak Spanish, they should be sung to the tune of (1) Un elefante se balanceaba and (2) A la vibora de la mar.

...I was one who downloaded this last year and my class and I sang it every morning for the two months prior to the state testing.

They loved it, and during state testing week, we would sing a couple at every break we got.

Definitely a motivation boost...thanks for sharing!

I noticed that there were lots of downloads, but no comments. Thanks for taking a few minutes to leave your replies. It makes it so much nicer to know that the work is appreciated.

Bethany, I was thrilled to read how OFTEN you used the little jingles! You and your students got more use from these than even _I_ did!! !

I do quite a bit of teaching with rhymes, rhythms and music. Sometimes they are wacky little rhythmic rhymes and other times some goofy little mnemonic. In years past I've had my students try to make up their own little tunes to remember some of the concepts. Oddly enough, even if it's not a perfect rhythm or rhyme, it WORKS because it came from them! You might want to try it some time!

Again, thanks to each of you for leaving your comments! They are much appreciated!

These are great. I love to sing with my students. They think it is so cheesy, but they secretly like it. My biggest critics are other teachers.

Thanks so much for sharing your jingles. I will be using them this year! Question for you---how do you check for the downloads? I'm curious about this feature!

Hi Linda! Before I answer your question, I just want to thank you and MS Math for taking a minute to leave your comments. As I told the others, it's nice to get some sort of response, and so your replies are much appreciated!

Ms. Math, I know that kids learn some of the most convoluted lyrics and/or rap songs through rhythm and music, so using that information tells me that this is yet another useful strategy for helping students to learn various concepts... so... cheesy or not... I'm gonna use it! !

Now, Linda, as for my way of figuring out the downloads, which hasn't really been confirmed to me by anyone, I just look at the line right next to the attachment, after the file size.
As of this post, next the English songs, it says "(39.5 KB, 76 views)" For the Spanish post, it says:"(31.5 KB, 11 views)". Again, I've never really had anyone say these are the downloads, but I'm assuming that's what the word 'views' is referring to.

apology???

Clip to ScrapBook #10

I am so sorry if I offended you, Risa. I love your songs, and I love to sing to and with my students. I just meant that they make up excuses when I give them songs, or jingles, or poems, or anything different to help them learn, but then I catch them using it. I apologize if you didn't take it that way.

NO NEED for apology!
Old 02-13-2008, 05:05 PM

Clip to ScrapBook #11

Hi Ms.Math! I didn't even think to be offended in any way!! Now it's MY turn to apologize! I'm so sorry that you thought I was offended. Not in the least! You're absolutely right about kids pretending they don't like to sing or that some of the songs are a bit off... but when we have fun with it, they will eventually join in. As a matter of fact, I've caught some of my students saying they don't like to sing, yet as they do their work, there they are trying NOT to hum the tune! !

After re-reading what I wrote, I guess the part that sounded like I was upset was "so... cheesy or not... I'm gonna use it!" That was intended to be what I might say to my students with a BIG SMILE!

Again, I was NEVER ever ever in a million, trillion, gazillion years offended... As a matter of fact, I was GIGGLING as I typed it! And now I'm giggling at how apologetic I'm being... *Imagine me down on my knees asking... begging... no... imploring.... wanting forgiveness* I know, I know.. it's a bit much, now! I'll stop here... while I'm ahead...I hope! !!

A week and a half before school starts, and here I am looking for test prep materials!!! Heh. That seems kind of odd. But I'm doing it anyway.

I love these and am putting the songs in my files. My fifth graders will learn to love singing with me this year... all year... so when it comes time to learn these, it'll just be new songs for them to learn!

Just want to say a BIG thank you for these songs. We're having a pep rally/reading camp on Sat. before the TAKS reading test on Tuesday. We're going to be using your songs. I also downloaded for free an instrumental version of "I Will Survive" that we will be using with the words that you posted several years ago. I don't know if that was written by you, so THANKS to the person who wrote it!!

Maybe you're the person I've been looking for. I need some titles of some commonly known Spanish songs so I can come up with more "test prep" songs. I can usually dream up some suitable lyrics once I have a tune in mind, but I don't know which songs would be easily known so that most any teacher in a bilingual setting would know it.

I thought of using the tune to "De Colores" because I know that a lot of our community members know it, but somehow I think I should look for other options.

Any suggestions?

I used to teach bilingual pre-k and I am just thinking of songs we did with the kids... some of them where just translations from English songs though...

La cucaracha
Tio Pancho tiene un rancho
A tuti-tata
Cinco ranitas

We sang 'Un elefante se balanceaba' a lot...

I don't think I am much help -- Pio peep has a lot of nursery rhymes and Latin lullabyes to work with.

I have my little Test Prep Songs booklet jazzed up, copied, and ready for my students next week---thanks to YOU (in fact, I even have your name credited, so you're becoming famous here in CA!).

The songs were a great morale boost for my students last year, as well as for me! Singing has a magical way of destressing

You mentioned De Colores, and I wondered if you have the book and CD that goes with it? My copy is at school, but I remember a couple of the songs with familiar tunes:

Buenos Dias (tune-Are You Sleeping, Brother John?)
La Arana Pequenita (tune-The Eensy Weensy Spider)

Thanks again for helping to make this time of the year a little more fun

Yes, I have various versions of "De Colores" and it's a standard favorite in my school.

Thanks for the song title suggestions. I'll see if I can work on them next week. This week is parent conference week, so I'm pretty swamped with all that it entails.

By the way, are you planning to go to the PT gathering? I'd love to meet all my California PT colleagues! Just imagine all the great ideas we can exchange! (Oops! I guess Las Vegas shouldn't be the place for shop talk, should it?? !!)

Can't help you out on this one...

Tried to get your songs as I read they are great. I am trying to put together ideas and an assembly to inspire and motivate our 3-5th grades to hopefully help them try harder for the Oct NECAPS and thought your songs might help. Unable to get them as I keep hitting a password/username protection comes up with an error. If it is not tooooo much trouble and if you would like to...may I please get the words do your songs.
