Letter Names & Sounds and Sight Words
Old 02-11-2008, 05:57 AM

Clip to ScrapBook #1

What program(s) do you use (if any) to introduce your kinders to letter names, letter sounds, and letter writing as well as high frequency word reading? Do you only use your reading series? Do you use a reading series at all? Do you use someting separate from your reading series?

My school is in the process of adopting a new reading series. In kindergarten we did not use the old one. I am wondering whether we should buy into the new one or not.

We currently create our own order of letter instruction using research articles from the internet. We make copies of phonics papers. We have a list of sight words that the children should know. What we do seems to work to get the children ready for 1st grade, but I am thinking we might be able to do more, but is it worth the cost of a packaged program?

We have the Trophies program for literacy, but we also use Lively Letters. It really helps the children with a visual and tactile reminder of letters and sounds.

Alphabet Jive

I use a song called the Alphabet Jive. It associates letters and sounds with actions. For example, a says ah, a says ah, alligator, alligator, ah, ah, ah. When the students say "alligator" they put their arms out in front and make an alligator's mouth. They love singing the song and it gets them moving!

I'm not sure who wrote the Alphabet Jive, Kerri M. But I could send the actions for each letter to you if you like.

Alphabet Poems
Old 02-15-2008, 02:30 PM

Clip to ScrapBook #10

We use Open Court reading and it has poems that go with the letters to help with sounds.

Pam the lamb I am
I say /a/ /a/ /a/ /a/ /a/
to tell the farmer where I am
/a/ /a/ /a/ /a/ /a/

My students really enjoy the poems. As a quick review I use the flash card version of the sound cards and we shorten the poem:

Pam the lamb, Pam the lamb,
/a/ /a/ /a/

HA! Forget OCR

OCR must be the worse program to teach to kinder. The poems used to teach letters recognition and sounds are boring and not children friendly. I would suggest avoiding the poems. Now I don't mind so much of the picture cards. I used most of the alpha picture cards and create body movement to help kids learn the sounds.

It's a chant, so we don't sing it (thank goodness :P) I could send the actions to you and NewNana. Private message me if either of you are interested.

We use MMH Treasures and Wilson Fundations. The Wilson we use more for letter formation and phonics. Treasures is our main reading program. I also use things I download from the Internet to go with specific themes.

We have a popular alphabet coloring song booklet for each child with the verses sung to the tune of "Skip to my Lou." It begins:
Ants on the apple
a,a,a,
Ants on the apple
a,a,a,
Ants on the apple
a,a,a,
'a' is the sound of A.

You can find the verse for each letter with a picture along with a simple music accompaniment here:
http://www.kiddyhouse.com/Songs/alpha/a.html

You can make your own verses too ( sample attached).
I just printed the screen page from kiddyhouse to make a sample page:
