Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes

Ok, so I know I posted this on the 3rd and 4th grade boards... I am starting this unit tomorrow and feel a bit unprepared.

Any great ideas?? We will be doing haiku poems and making cranes. I was thinking of making a little journal and recording their thoughts after each chapter as well as doing some acting. Our school also has a set of calligraphy materials so I would like them to learn to do their names or a symbol of some kind.

We will read a chapter a day for about 2 weeks, so this will be really short.

Anything I am missing???

is that the one with the little girl who is dying and makes cranes so that she can have her wish?? If so how about trying a bit of community outreach and getting the kids to do something nice for kids who are sick in the hospital (although you MAY want to avoid the dying child topic, but that depends on your community). the kids could make pretty pictures, or cards, or books for little kids - then take them in and share with kids in hospital. in fact your class might surprise you and come up with lots of nice things they can do!

I noticed you are from Washington. State? Because there is a park dedicated to Sadako with a statue of her and people have dropped off paper cranes there, as well as a plaque. Perhaps you can find pictures of it and make cranes to put there, etc. Or even visit! It's it the university area--not sure exactly as I am not from Washington. It's called "Peace Park."

I was thinking of going to the park when we finish the book. I'll have to see.

Peace Park is kind of small!

If you've never been, just an FYI. It's rather small and just off of a road/bus stop. There isn't room to play, just the statue and a bench. If you have been, then you know what I mean!
