Hi. Does anyone know of a cute story to introduce what maps are? I have to teach making maps and we also have to make a map of our classroom. Thanks.

I introduced my unit with Lost! by David McPhail. It is about a bear that gets lost and how a boys helps him find his home. I use it to show when to use a map and/or globe. (Mailbox had a little unit with this boox awhile back that had a handout of land/water features on a map.)

I follow with Me on the Map. It is great- if you are looking for a book that teaches how our neighborhood and homes are part of a bigger world.... Not so great if you need map skills and cardinal directions.

Thanks! Those sound like great choices. They sound like what I need for kindergarten level introduction to maps.

I just found a book at the school book fair with Dr. Seuss' Cat in the Hat All About Maps. It's called There's A Map on My Lap. Might be good for kgtn level.

I've been on a social studies committee in my district, helping to write and pilot our first grade ss. Maps is one of our big units.

One of the teachers on the committee came across this book and uses it with her kids. There is a pull out map that she laminated. Then as she reads the book, she has kids come up and mark on the laminated map with a vis a vis pen to show how far they have gone for each page of the story.

We also us Me on the Map and The Cat in the Hat has a Map on his lap that the other posters referred to.

We make copies of our school map. Some of the room numbers are listed and some are not. We take the maps on clipboards and walk around the bldg filling in missing room numbers and identifying the art room, gym, cafeteria, media center, computer lab, etc.

One of the follow ups to this is to color code different sections of the map. I make an overhead of the school map. We decide what color to color different grade levels...we might color all kdgn rooms blue, first grade rooms purple, etc.

It's a fun, hands on unit!

I use a book called, "Are We There Yet, Daddy." I don't know the author because it is at school. If I have time soon I will check. The children love it and we read it over and over again in kindergarten. Mrs. T
