how many of you are required to go school board meetings?? If you are, how many do you have to attend a year?

I don't know about everyone else that is required to do this, but every time I go I sit there thinking how pointless it is for me to be there. We're required to attend 2 a year. I totally understand teachers attending if there's issues we need to discuss with the board, but 98% of the time we don't say one single word the whole meeting.

Oh well, as of tonight my two for the year are finished!! YAY

No we are not required to attend any meetings. We even had one at our school last year and we weren't even required to attend that one. Sounds like a micromanageing trip.

We are small compared to where I used to work (10 elem) and are not required to attend any. Are you a small district?

school board meetings

We are asked to sign up to attend one each year. Some teachers don't sign up because of other commitments, but our principal wants at least one teacher at every meeting. When I went they mainly asked how certain policies they had approved were working and if there were any problems they should look into. It wasn't too long, but we are a smaller school.

If I had to go to a school board meeting, I would probably end up getting fired because I would have to tell them exactly what I thought about a few things.

We are not required to, but my district has a very strong association. There are times were certain issues are being discussed so many will attend just because they feel the board needs to know how association members and non-members alike feel.

The board does not want us at the board meetings. Not that that keeps teachers away.

Not There but Represented

I really don't think they want us there.

Our Union executive board is at every meeting to represent teacher interests. That's one of the reasons I pay my dues.

We are not required to go to any board meetings, but our principal gently hints that he could use some support when he is there presenting our annual school data. Since we like this new principal, almost all of us go.
During the bad old times, the (previous) principal noted who was or wasn't present, and rewarded those who came with Starbucks cards and thank-you cards. The ones who didn't show up would get the talk-to-the-hand treatment for a week.

we are not required to attend any meetings. I have never even been introduced to any school board members. I am also in a small district, we have approx. 300 kids from PK-12, so I have probably met the members - it just wasn't announced!

Yes, we are a very small school with grades PreK-8 and only a little over 100 students. Two teachers are required to attend every school board meeting (as we only have 10 teachers total). We just sit there and listen for the most part. They do ask if there are any "public media comments" which is our cue to say something if we want to. The thing is if I have a problem with something school related I would never talk about it openly and directly to the school board at a meeting. I'd talk to our union president and have the union handle it.

I think what annoys me the most about having to attend these meetings is the fact that not all the teachers in our building go to the ones they are signed up to go to. They convienently forget when it's their month. Also, I live 25 minutes away so on a night I have to go to a meeting I'm making 2 round trips to school in one day and gas prices aren't getting any cheaper. I think next time we negotiate our contract I'm going to bring this up and try to get things changed.

Sorry...I turned my thread into vent!

We have a small school (160 kids) and we have a faculty rep that attends ALL the board meetings. I have never held that position, but each person in our school is required to be on some sort of committee and we have a meeting once a month.

Board Meetings

We are not required to go, but I attend almost all of them...I like to know what is going on in my district (it is quite large) and have input into what is happening here. They meet every other week and I attend at least one per month, but usually both of them...we are now starting a superintendant search..so I will definitely be going!

Only our director goes to meet with the board. We are a charter school, so I don't think I've even met any of our board members...

We are not required to attend school board meetings but we do when students from our school/classroom are making a presentation. Every board meeting begins with these presentations. This month, it was the agriculture class from our high school.

I may not attend, but you can bet I watch the meeting on our community's public access channel soon after it happens.
