Sub Folder

Clip to ScrapBook #2

I'm in a middle school, so classes change every 45 minutes.

*Detailed lesson plans
*Seating charts
*Map of the school
*Instructions for Emergency Lockdowns, Fire and Tornado Emergencies
and Crisis Evacuation plans
*Daily schedule (times of each class, lunch, etc.)
*Instructions on who to contact for behavior issues, etc (names and
extension numbers)
*Information on who needs to go to the office for medications and when
they go

If I have a good educational article I may leave that. I have 2 paraprofessionals that are in and out of my room throughout the day, so I also leave their schedules and a note explaining that they can probably answer any questions.
I place all necessary books, worksheets, etc. with post-it notes identifying which class, etc. it is for, on my desk with the sub folder on top.

My sub kit...

.... includes those things that will help my sub the most.
1. A schedule (annotated with routines for specials and lunch/recess time)
2. Many extra activies just in case.
3. The name of one of my teammate who knows where everything is,and covers emergency restroom breaks( we don't have interconnecting doors in my building.)
4. The names of children who have medical or other special concerns on a day to day basis.
5. The names of my 2 most responsible students.
6. The names of the reading specialist and resource teacher as kthey provide in room services.
I treat my subs like professionals. I expect that they will cover most anything I would if I were present. I do offer options for group or independent work based on the classes behvior/ the sub's preference.
I hope this gives some insight.

I include the above materials in my folder too. I also include a seating chart, my behavior plan so they can be consistent with what I use. I always leave a day full of lesson plans on the off chance that my absence is unplanned and that I have no plans made . There are always extra activities and worksheets to fill time.

sub folder

I subbed before, so I tried to remember everything I wish I had back then:
Class roll
Class schedule
Emergency lesson plans
2 reliable student's names (1 boy and 1 girl)
reliable teachers to ask for help
blank paper for the sub to leave notes on how his/her day went

I used a form that Mailbox Superbook has in it - it's wonderful to make sure you have all the names of the office personnel, etc... handy for the sub.

*big red note on folder: please leave on my desk (i've had a couple subs return it to the office (????? why? it wasn't picked up in the office). i realize some school do it this way.

*a page of pictures of my students' faces along with their names

*i have a (those of you that visit proteacher often know that i can be verbose and like things "just so") list of Important Information for Substitutes--Please Read. It lists everything that i think would make the day run easier for a guest teacher: phone numbers of who to call and where to send a behavior problem; my bathroom policy; info about classroom jobs; note to please not grade any work, etc. (if i have a new sub lined up, i ask him/her to come in early to give enough time to read)

*i stack of challenging/fun crossword puzzle "just in case"
