I am going to this after break. Have kids pick a vacation spot of choice...like Hawaii, Disneyland..they have to research the place and "sell" it to their parents as a persuasive letter. Could also make a travel brochure.

I had the kids write whether third graders should get homework. The assignment became a cool bulletin board.

I use fake money in class to "pay" or "fine" students during the class. It is a great motivator, and includes economic concepts such as consumerism and scarcity. The last day of the month, students are asked to donate one old toy to a classroom auction. Students write a persuasive essay/ paragraph to sell their item for the most money possible. We discuss use of descriptive adjectives and commercial tactics prior to the auctions. Students are allowed to make signs, do skits and dress up. The writing is great, and parents really get into this assignment too!

Dear Mrs. LaRue/Hey Little Ant

This is a great book with persuasive letters. There is also an activity on the ########## website about this. It has lots of fun prompts for the kids to pick from...
After Hey Little Ant they write either to save the ant or step on it to convince the little boy in the story.

Sorry it won't let me list the website...some of the prompts were from the spider to the homeowner, hairbrush to the hair, fly to the spider, mouse to the cat, etc. I always give a graphic organizer first where they list the 3 reasons they'll use and an example for each.

One topic we used to write a persuasive paragraph was whether it was better to be a kid or adult - very creative reasons!

I recently had my students write a letter to their parents persuading them that something they owned was either worn out or broken and needed to be replaced. One tried to persuade her parents to get her a new book bag; another one asked for new shoes...they were really creative! We also talked about which arguments "work" on parents, and which ones don't.

This book is a must for teaching persuasion. It is filled with awesome lessons. I use some of them with my 5th grade class.
