Clip to ScrapBook #1

My students were supposed to perform for our monthly assembly in February...We were going to sing Nifty Fifty United States...however, I decided my kids needed more time to practice, since I came up with the idea so close to the assembly along with test pressure...I thought we would have plenty of time to practice, since we wouldnt have to perform til April...

Well then something happened....The whole 5th grade decided to sing a medley of American songs, ending it with the Nifty Fifty.....I was a bit irritated, because no one at my school has ever sang this song before in all of the years I have been there....people have never even mentioned it...well, I find out they are practicing the song, although they didnt start practicing it til AFTER my class...

anyways, they performed it just a few days ago.....

My class needs to perform in April and I don't want to copy the 5th graders and do the same song.......I really don't know what to do.......Does anyone have any suggestions or songs/poems/chants my 3rd graders could perform for like 5 minutes??

We study the solar system, American government/symbols/famous figures, animals/ecosystems.....

My class performed what a wonderful world by louis armstrong - I know it doesn't have anything to do with the solar sys, gov, etc. but everyone loved it!

I have a solar system song, but it is at school. It is cute. It goes through the entire system, one by one, and is sung to the tune of some song (can't remember right off the top of my head).

Let me know if you want me to post it. I go into my classroom Sunday
afternoons, so could post it that evening, if you wanted.

Would the Purple People Eater fit your Space theme? Kids today don't seem to know this song and find it fun to hear. Here are the lyrics anyway:

An animated version is on YouTube- could you project this on a large screen at the same time? This would be great! In any case the video might give you ideas for actions

Our school just had it's chorus performance, and one of the songs was really cute...you could do this for animals.

If You Love A Hippopotamus

If you love a hippopotamus
And you love her alotamus
She will be your friend (your friend)
That can be mighty handy now and then

'Cause if you're stuck outside (outside)
And the door on the house won't budge (won't budge)
Your friend the hippo will lean on it
And give it that extra nudge (ungh!)

If you love a hippopotamus
And you love her alotamus
She will be your friend (your friend)
That can be mighty handy now and then

And if you want a cookie (I want a cookie!)
But it's too high on the shelf (too high)
You can climb on the back of a hippopotamus
And get one for yourself (and one for her too!)

If you love a hippopotamus
And you love her alotamus
She will be your friend (your friend)
That can be mighty handy now and then

"Cause if you're put to bed (bedtime!)
And you find that you just can't sleep (can't sleep)
Your friend the hippopotamus
Into your room will creep

And she'll sing you a lullaby (lullaby)
'Til you begin to snore
Then she'll tiptoe out
Hippopotamusly and slam the door (WHAM!)

If you love a hippopotamus
And you love her alotamus
She will be your friend (your friend)
That can be mighty handy now and then

Yup!

Bear In There by Shel Silverstein- Choral Reading

There's a Polar Bear
In our Frigidaire--
He likes it 'cause it's cold in there.
With his seat in the meat
And his face in the fish
And his big hairy paws
In the buttery dish,
He's nibbling the noodles,
He's munching the rice,
He's slurping the soda,
He's licking the ice.
And he lets out a roar
If you open the door.
And it gives me a scare
To know he's in there--
That Polary Bear
In our Fridgitydaire.

The Turtle
Jack Prelutsky

The turtle's always been inclined
to live within his shell.
But why he cares to be confined,
the turtle does not tell.

The turtle's always satisfied
to slowlycreep and crawl,
and never wanders far outside
his living room or hall.

So if you wish to visit him
in his domestic dome,
just knock politely on his shell,
you'll find the turtle home.

You can divide the class into two groups for the choral reading. Have some lines everyone says, some lines a few people say. And some lines one person (who is really loud) says alone.

Make animal headbands if your kids won't think it's too babyish. take a piece of border paper or a sentence strip and fit it like a crown. Create a cut out of the top of a turtle head, or just of a turtle and glue it on top. Do the same for polar bear and hippopotamus.

You could also have kids share some facts about each animal mentioned... hippo, turtle, bear- their habitats and whatnot.

about the solar system sung to the tune of Farmer in the Dell. It may be the one eliza was talking about:

I usually teach this during our solar system unit. Hope it helps!

Yes! That's the one. Thanks. Now I won't worry about getting it when I go in this weekend.
