What sort of awards do you give out to students in your classroom at the end of the year? This is my first year teaching and I have no clue what to do! Any suggestions would be great--thanks!

Last year, I had the kids come up with their own categories and vote for one student for each category. I told them I would have final say. So I tallied them up, and gave awards-- one to each kid-- as best I could based on the votes. So, although they might have voted Johnny as being the best artist, with Henry in second, I might have given Henry the award instead if Johnny was also voted best (or second best) in altheticism. Make sense? The kids, btw, also made the awards out of construction paper (and they were really creative- a crown for the drama queen, a book for the best reader, etc).

This is the first year I have done this- I teach 5th. When I taught younger kids, we didn?t do awards for everyone at the end of the year.

I traditionally have an awards party at year's end. We do honor the Principal's List, Honor Roll and Citizenship List winners. Then awards are handed out to those who achieved outstanding attendance, and exhibited great behavior and work habits. Then the best three in each discipline (Math, Writing, Reading, Spelling, Penmanship, Art, Music, Gym, etc) are given certificates ala the Olympics--Gold, Silver and Bronze. Children who were outstanding classroom helpers and monitors receive certificates, as well. By this time each child usually has received at least one citation. If not, I'll make up a special award for the child who did not earn one of the others. The kids and parents walk out happy.

categories that are awards for the end of the year assembly for 1-3rd graders. Perfect Attendance, Citizen of the Year B/G (voted on by the students of the class) Most Improved Reader B/G, Most Improved Mathematician B/G, and Most improved Overall B/G. We are also allowed on Teacher Choice Award if one of the above does not fit our class. But we only give 5 categories. In the past we had teachers giving out awards to every student for things like; smiled every day, came with the right shoes on for pe on pe day, etc. So now those awards are given in the classroom and the above are given at a schoolwide assembly
