Anyone have a favorite novel or short story you read aloud to your students for the Thanksgiving/Christmas Holiday?

Here is a short list:
--Miracle on 34th Street by Valentines Davies, illustrated by Tomie DePaola
--The Thanksgiving Treasure by Gail Rock
--The House Without a Christmas Tree by Gail Rock
--Amazing Christmas Extravaganza by David Shannon
--Welcome Comfort by Patricia Polacco
--Christmas Tapestry by Patricia Polacco
--An Orange for Frankie by Patricia Polacco
--The Trees of the Dancing Goat by Patricia Polacco
--A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens
--The Christmas Miracle of Jonathan Toomey by Susan Wojciechowski

As I was looking how to spell the name of the last author, I noticed on Amazon that there is a "Night Before Christmas series." Take a look at some of the titles. Maybe your students could use this as a jumping-off point for a writing project.

Those all look great. David Shannon is one of my favorites, so I'll have to check that out for sure!

I second all of ConnieWI's list and would add:
Silver Package by Cynthia Rylant ( a lovely story set in Appalachia that makes me cry every time I read it aloud
Just in Time for Christmas by Louise Borden.

I always do a theme board for holiday stories and we chart the common themes (traditions, family, love and caring for one another)

N.C. Wyeth's Pilgrims is a beautiful picture book based on historical fact and his paintings that tell the story.

Coraline by Neil Gaimon is really pretty creepy. The kids like it a lot. It makes a good read aloud.

Here are a few more titles of great literature for December. I get choked up at the end of December and Santa Calls every time I read them to the students!

December - Eve Bunting
Night Tree - Eve Bunting
The Polar Express - Chris van Allsburg
Santa Calls - William Joyce
Uncle Vova's Tree - Patricia Polacco
