Hi all,
I am looking for a good book to read to a grade 6 class at the beginning of the year. Any suggestions?

How about Eric Walters? Camp X was a big hit with my grade 7s last year, and I know another grade 6 teacher read it to her kids and they loved it (he came to our school, so we all used his books as a read aloud before he came).

I saw him at a conference earlier this year, but I don't think my students are that familiar with him. I will read some of his books this summer. Thanks

Definitely Eric Walters. Also, Gordon Korman is very popular with my grade 7s.

-Because of Winn Dixie and The Tale of Despereaux, both by Kate DiCamillo
-Hanna's Suitcase by Karen Levine (goes very nicely with The Diary of Anne Frank)
-Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes by Eleanor Coerr
-anything written by Eric Wilson
-Hatchet by Gary Paulsen

I agree with all of the previous posters. I would add to it your provincial young reader's choice award nominees for 2009. You read (or the students read) a specific number of books from the list and then students can vote for their favourite. My class is excited every year and they get to hear the best of recent Canadian authors.

I have a few terrific read alouds for Junior students. The Cay, Maniac Magee, and The Cat Ate My Gym Suit. I have read all of these aloud and the students really enjoyed them.
