I'm moving from 1st to 5th next year and I'm hoping to quickly build a classroom library ( I will be teaching using a RW model). Can anyone suggest some titles or authors that I should purchase. I'm not familiar with many 5th grade level books or authors (I know my picture books though) Thanks!

Jerry Spinelli (for higher level readers)
Anthony Horowitz (Alex Rider Adventures)
Suzanne Collins (Gregor the Overlander series)
Kathryn Lasky (Guardians of Ga'Hoole)
Bruce Coville (Magic Shop Books)

Years ago, I moved from 2nd grade to 5th grade. I was amazed at how alike the kids were. I think you will love how much easier it is to work with older kids.

There are lots more! Wait to buy some of them after you get your class. See what they like and don't like. It is a GREAT grade to teach!

To the OP-

You've read my mind -- I've been having the same questions, too!!

As I cleaned out my old classroom and packed away my 20+ book baskets, I was worried that they'd have to sit in storage for a while...but I should be able to use many of the them...

That said, I'm sure I'll be hitting up the Scholastic Warehouse sale to buy even more books --

Talk again soon,
Kara
